4Walls International empowers socially and environmentally degraded communities to turn trash into the building blocks for community centers, schools, creative gathering places, infrastructure improvements, affordable housing and other infill development projects. Our projects promote a higher quality of life, environmental stewardship, and improved access to water, food, shelter, and sanitation.
4Walls is currently continuing with it's Bi-National Placemaking Program, while researching the feasibility of a Field Station and Marine Laboratory in San Quintn Baja California, Mxico. We are also currently developing a Social-Environmental Impact Bond that will incentivize trash and tires in the border region and create a sustainable funding mechanism for years to come. 2017-2018 will see heavy focus on this bond mechanism and potentially more community engagement work for the San Quintin project while we continue our art-education programming in southbay San Diego.
2016-2017 saw 4Walls develop it's Bi-National Placemaking Program, completing three public park projects in the border region of Imperial Beach/Tijuana. We worked with local youth to repurpose trash from schools into park infrastructure and worked with local artists to create public art that brings light to the social and environmental stressors of our region. We also repurposed trash out of tributary channels to the Tijuana River and created examples of re-purposing options that are more cost-effective than cleaning trash out of the river after it has entered the watershed. The work has continued to gain momentum and we find ourselves teaching more and more people how to re-purpose trash and tires. Specifically, our operations:- Reached more than 700 local volunteers- Taught 380 local youth how to repurpose trash- Created 5 large murals- Created 9 sculptures- Repurposed 4,000 plastic bottles stuffed with 1,000 pounds of plastics and foam- Repurposed 450 scrap tires- Created 3 public parks
