MEMBER SERVICES LUPE provides critical services to immigrants and working families to help them build better lives. We help families stretch their limited resources to the greatest extent possible by offering valuable services at moderate cost and/or by offering opportunities to improve their individual skills in one or more of our self-development classes (ESL, GED. Citizenship, etc.). In 2019, LUPE staff prepared 737 DACA applications and 649 applications for US Citizenship, among many other critical services. Altogether, our staff processed 2,213 cases for immigration benefits. Our income tax services prepared and submitted tax returns that generated more than Two Million dollars in refunds for those families. Our Health on Wheels program continued working with a mobile clinic to take primary healthcare services to underserved communities across the Rio Grande Valley. In 2019, the clinics served more than 2,000 low-income residents. The program also conducted monthly Health Talks to educate local residents about important health issues like diabetes, obesity, and mosquito-borne diseases. Finally, the program organized 8 Health Clubs in low-income communities across the region to demonstrate preparation of healthier versions of favorite dishes to encourage better nutrition.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT LUPE continues to work with community leaders in more than 50 local communities to develop their natural leadership skills. Those leaders become advocates for social change in their communities and mobilize their friends and neighbors to support policy changes that impact their communities with regard to health and well-being, safety and security, and educational equity.
