Learning Equality is committed to enabling every person in the world to realize their right to a quality education, by supporting the creation, adaptation and distribution of open educational resources, and creating supportive tools for innovative pedagogy.
In 2019 we continued our work as a key technology provider and partner for educational initiatives operating in low-resource contexts all around the world. Major accomplishments include:Ongoing development of the Kolibri ecosystem, a set of interacting products that includes our open-source educational platform specially designed to provide offline access to a curated and openly licensed educational content library with tools for pedagogical support for use in low-resource and low-connectivity contexts. Our education technology platforms have reached over 6 million people in more than 200 countries and territories.Supported 29 national NGOs across multiple countries through our hardware grants program to test different hardware setups, including content access points in formal schools in Malawi and coding programs in Cte dIvoire, tablets with Raspberry Pis for school kits in South Africa, and TV white space for last mile access in Nigeria.Collaborated with UNHCR, UN Women, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development curators, and Education Cannot Wait to improve Kolibri to meet the needs of learners in emergency and crisis contexts and provide aligned and vetted content.Worked with UNHCR, Vodafone Foundation, Google.org, and UNESCO to convene curricular specialists, machine learning experts, and educators with experience supporting refugees to build tools to support semi-automated curriculum alignment.
