Organizations Filed Purposes: TO PROTECT THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS WATERSHEDS THROUGH RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND RESTORATION. THE ORGANIZATION'S MAIN FOCUS IS ONTHE ISSUE OF PLASTIC POLLUTION AND ITS EFFECT ON THE MARINE ECOSYSTEM AND POTENTIAL RISKS TO HUMAN HEALTH THROUGH THE TRANSFER OF TOXINS FROM INGESTED PLASTIC DEBRIS BY FISH AND THROUGH THE FOOD CHAIN. THE ORGANIZATION'S GOAL IS TO DEVELOP A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPACT OF PLASTICS ON OUR MARINE ENVIORNMENT BY EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE ECOLOGICAL VALUE AND VULNERABILITIES OF OUR OCEANS AND HOW INDIVIDUAL ACTIONS INFLUENCE THE MARINE ECOSYSTEM AND HUMAN HEALTH.

EDUCATIONAlgalita facilitated the first ever Harvard Environmental Action and Leadership Summit in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition, we joined as camp counselors at the Bahamas Plastic Movement's summer camp in Eleuthera, a beautiful island in The Bahamas, we led 300+ youth at the 2nd annual Ocean Heroes Bootcamp held in Vancouver Canada, we presented at "The Conference in Europe" and worked with students at the Communications University of Lisbon in Portugal, we facilitated a youth leadership training summit in collaboration with Seattle Aquarium, Lonely Whale, and Captain Planet Foundation in Seattle, we presented at "Turning the Ship Around," a conference hosted by CRRA, we join strategy discussions at "Unwrapped," a conference focused on the health risks of plastics and food packaging chemicals held in Scotts Valley, and we participated in the launch of our movements documentary The Story of Plastic.

PREVENTIONAlgalita participated in every aspect of the movement to end plastic pollution. We investigated how plastics build up in our ocean, air, and wildlife. We actively shared perspectives with plastic industry leaders, policy makers, and corporations across the globe. Together with partners, we built a web of connections between researchers, organizers, educators, and young people.

RESEARCH Algalita turned 25 this year! We celebrated with a special expedition to the North Pacific gyre in partnership with Korean Broadcasting System, who produced a plastic pollution documentary that was broadcasted to millions of households. Also, in 2019, we hosted our 9th annual International Youth Summit on Plastic Pollution - an event that supported 24 action campaigns across eight countries. We directly trained 623 educators on how to integrate plastic pollution curriculum into their classrooms and helped lead phase one of a district-wide transition to zero waste schools in Long Beach, CA. This year we hosted our 2nd annual Youth Innovation Forum that brought together 82 young systemic thinkers who practiced how to critically evaluate the innovations, initiatives, and power dynamics that could lead to major shifts in the status quo. Our zero-waste retail outpost, BYO at Algalita, reached over 18,000 product refills in 2019!
