Children, youth and parent programs for the Long Beach area
DAYS Long Beach participants are from areas of Long Beach where there are high numbers of children in poverty, experiencing food insecurity, dropping out of school and falling into gangs. We take a holistic approach to address social, cultural and economic barriers providing services free of charge in three key areas:Youth Education and Development: After-shool tutoring and montoring program, offered year-round for at-risk youth in grades K-12.Summer Program is offered to children and youth ages 5-17 that are from socioeconomically disadvantanged families. The Camp has a child-to-adult ratio that is lower than most classrooms, allowing for more individual attention, and the program pursues topic areas that align with the LBUSD curriculum. DAYS provides transportation and partners with a variety of local agencies to offier field trips and learning experiences for 200 children each year.
Parent and Family Support: Parent Engagement/Empowerment is a project to address various community issues that are creating barriers to education and quality of life for disadvantaged, low-income children and their families.Support for immigrant communities through services and partnerships that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, including but not limited to know-your-rights campaigns, transportation assistance, translation and language support.
Leadership and Academic Success: Leaders Long Beach (LLB) is a program that has been spearheaded by alumni of the Summer Program of 2014. It is comprised of 25 youth ages 15-24 who are volunteering their time to mobilize their peers to address community issues, peer-to-peer tutoring, mentoring, building healthy relationships and to strengthen leadership, civic engagement and employment skills.College-Bound Workshops are targeted to middle and high school students that experience barriers to higher education, and who are often from undocumented, very-low income families. Attendees receive assistance in writing personal narratives, and completing college financial aid applications.Scholarships, offered since 2014, are awarded annually to local high school seniors and college students who are making a difference by giving back and supporting the community through programs and services offered by DAYS Long Beach.
