Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust of Long Beach and Seal Beach seeks to acquire, restore, preserve and provide education about the former estuary of the Lower San Gabriel River, its tidal salt marsh, riparian habitats, and buffer of coastal sage scrub habitats.
RESTORATION, STEWARDSHIP & GENERAL MISSION: In 2019, the Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust supported numerous activities to support the overall mission of preserving, protecting, and stewarding Los Cerritos Wetlands as a healthy, natural open space. We sponsored extensive habitat restoration, including activities that improve wetlands water quality. We removed unsightly and unnecessary fencing and other aging infrastructure, maintained a robust native plant demonstration garden and publicized community-based restoration events.
ADVOCACY: The Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust serves as active advocate for the protection of Los Cerritos Wetlands and the surrounding San Gabriel River estuary. In 2019, the organization executed environmental advocacy campaigns and provided oversight, collaboration, expertise, and defense of the wetlands in the following areas:We have engaged experts to further review the environmental aspects of the SEASP (Southeast Area Development Specific Plan) zoning update, so that the final plan will contain wider, habitat-focused and more robust buffers between wetlands and development, and so that there will be no roads adjacent to Los Cerritos Wetlands that would harm wildlife. We actively participated in review of and workshops about comprehensive restoration planning for Los Cerritos Wetlands in order to ensure the final plan will provide the highest level of habitat protection.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH & PUBLIC EDUCATION: The Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust offers numerous programs in outdoor and ecological education. Among these is the unique community service of free monthly guided nature walks and low-cost tours through Los Cerritos Wetlands and nearby river estuary, led by trained ecologists and naturalists. These experts provide people of all ages with an immersive experience in our local wetlands, while at the same time educating tour attendees about the history and importance of Los Cerritos Wetlands. The Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust also provides wetlands field trips for elementary classrooms with an emphasis on 3rd and 4th grade students at Title 1 schools. We collaborate with Long Beach Parks, Recreation, and Marine in their hands-on Be S.A.F.E. summer youth program by introducing the tidal salt marsh ecosystem to young explorers from underserved communities. We have now expanded our programing into Orange County where we provide where we provide educational field trips for elementary school students in the Santa Ana Unified School District.
