We exist to ensure the world's key decision makers consistently and routinely take into account the full value of nature and the consequences of their activities on natural systems, thereby averting economic and social disruptions due to the mismanagement of natural capital and environmental risk. We will deliver this by creating a platform to enable easy-to-use, inexpensive, scientifically credible, continuously updated global information on natural resources, coupled with the creation of powerful and relevant decision-support tools. The platform and tools will exponentially lower the cost and time to analyze data and translate it into insights that decision makers can use.
The Earthrise program focuses on ensuring the broad availability of satellite imagery to track environmental changes on the planet. Primarily focused on education and journalism, it aims to create a new social awareness of planetary change. In 2019, this work included the launch of Earthrise Alliance.
In 2019, we began work on delivering GRAT to a fourth water district, Merced Irrigation District. This was done in collaboration with our partner Sustainable Conservation and was part of the CA Department of Water Resources work for Flood-MAR. The objective of GRAT is to define the best available locations (spatial) and timing (temporal) for the recharge of underlying groundwater aquifers. This type of groundwater recharge is a key solution within California to address the underlying drought conditions consistent with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act.
This effort is led by Earth Genome and Arizona State University and is focused on identifying data and tools necessary to increase environmental flows in key rivers and watersheds in Texas. This work is funded by the Mitchell Foundation and engages over 20 different local Texas stakeholders including all three key Texas state agencies involved with managing water. In 2019, we launched individual pilots focused in 3 different watersheds: Brazos, Trinity, and San Antonio. We plan to launch the first of these tools in 2020 focused on groundwater leases for the Brazos River basin.
