Organizations Filed Purposes:
ADVANCEMENT PROJECT IS A NEXT GENERATION, MULTI-RACIAL CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATION. ROOTED IN THE GREAT HUMAN RIGHTS STRUGGLES FOR EQUALITY AND JUSTICE, WE EXIST TO FULFILL AMERICA'S PROMISE OF A CARING, INCLUSIVE AND JUST DEMOCRACY. WE USE INNOVATIVE TOOLS AND STRATEGIES TO STRENGTHEN SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND ACHIEVE HIGH IMPACT POLICY CHANGE.
EDUCATIONAL EQUITYOUR EDUCATIONAL EQUITY PROGRAM PRODUCED THE SECOND ANNUAL BIRTH TO TWELFTH GRADE WATER COOLER CONFERENCE IN SACRAMENTO. THE TWO-DAY CONFERENCE BROUGHT TOGETHER MANY DEDICATED EARLY CHILDHOOD AND K-12 STAKEHOLDERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE. TOGETHER, WE WERE ABLE TO VET IDEAS FOR POLICY AND PRACTICE TO BUILD A SHARED EQUITY AGENDA THAT SUPPORTS ALL OF CALIFORNIA'S CHILDREN AND FAMILIES NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE. WE ALSO LAUNCHED OUR DRAFT POLICY PLATFORM FOR DUAL LANGUAGE LEARNERS (DLLS), DEVELOPED IN CONJUNCTION WITH EARLY EDGE CALIFORNIA. THE PLATFORM WILL BUILD ON THE GUBERNATORIAL ADMINISTRATION'S INTEREST IN EARLY LEARNING AND CARE TO BRING A FOCUS ON DUAL LANGUAGE LEARNERS AS A KEY COMPONENT OF BUILDING A HIGH-QUALITY SYSTEM IN CALIFORNIA.
VOTER PROTECTIONTHE GOALS OF OUR VOTER PROTECTION PROGRAM INCLUDE DEFEATING FEDERAL AND LOCAL POLICIES THAT MAKE IT HARDER TO VOTE, HOLDING LOCAL AND STATE ELECTION OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE IN VA, AZ, GA, FL, AND OH, AND BUILDING-UP THE NEXT GENERATION VOTING RIGHTS MOVEMENT.IN MISSOURI, WE ACHIEVED A MAJOR VICTORY IN OUR LONGSTANDING VOTER ID CASE. IN PRIORITIES USA V. MISSOURI, THE MISSOURI SUPREME COURT UPHELD A LOWER COURT RULING AND PERMANENTLY STRUCK A PORTION OF MISSOURI'S VOTER ID LAW. AS A RESULT, ELECTION OFFICIALS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REQUIRE A PHOTO ID TO VOTE OR REPRESENT IN ADVERTISING AND MATERIALS THAT A PHOTO ID IS REQUIRED TO VOTE. RIGHT TO VOTEIN OUR RIGHT TO VOTE PROGRAM, WE WORK TO EXPAND ELECTORATE THROUGH ELIMINATING CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS AS BARRIER TO VOTING AND RESTORING VOTING RIGHTS TO PEOPLE WITH FELONY CONVICTIONS IN FLORIDA, VIRGINIA, AND LOUISIANA AND INCREASE SUPPORT FOR A ROBUST DEMOCRACY, INCLUDING AN AFFIRMATIVE RIGHT TO VOTEIN MARCH 2019, WE HOSTED A CONVENING IN FLORIDA FOR ABOUT 40 ATTENDEES REPRESENTING OVER 20 ORGANIZATIONS TO DISCUSS THE NEWLY PASSED AMENDMENT AND HOW THE MOVEMENT CAN SUPPORT RIGHTS RESTORATION EFFORTS IN FLORIDA. AT THE CONVENING, WE DISCUSSED THE ACTUAL WORDING OF THE AMENDMENT AND KEY DEFINITIONS, AND WAYS TO TAKE THIS INTO THE COMMUNITY TO ENCOURAGE CIVIC PARTICIPATION AND ROBUST VOTER REGISTRATION EFFORTS. ONE CHALLENGE OF IMPLEMENTATION IS THAT MANY OF THE IMPACTED COMMUNITIES ARE PEOPLE WHO HAD NEVER EXERCISED THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE BEFORE AND THAT WE NEEDED TO INCLUDE POLITICAL EDUCATION TO INFORM THOSE NEWLY ELIGIBLE TO VOTE ON REGISTERING, POLLING PLACES, AND THEIR OVERALL RIGHTS IS IMPERATIVE.
OPPORTUNITY TO LEARNOUR OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN PROGRAM ALSO TOOK MAJOR STEPS TOWARD CREATING SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS FOR YOUTH OF COLOR AND ENDING CRIMINALIZATION BY SCHOOLS THIS YEAR. IN 2018 WE LAUNCHED A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN, WITH THE ALLIANCE FOR EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE AND SEVERAL GRASSROOTS GROUPS, TO REMOVE POLICE FROM SCHOOLS, WHILE CONTINUING OUR ORGANIZING AND STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS WORK WITH GRASSROOTS PARTNERS IN FLORIDA, DENVER, PHILADELPHIA, CHICAGO, PHOENIX AND OTHER COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.WE WORKED WITH POWER U IN MIAMI ON THEIR FIGHT ON THE SCHOOL BUDGET DEMANDING A DECREASE IN FUNDING FOR SCHOOL POLICE AND HEAVY SECURITY MEASURES AND, INSTEAD, INCREASE FUNDING FOR STUDENT CENTRIC SUPPORTS INCLUDING COUNSELING, NURSES, AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES THAT ARE INTEGRAL TO THEIR SUCCESS. WITH THE SUPPORT OF OUR PARTNER, BEN & JERRY'S, WE SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED A PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN BY SPREADING OUR MESSAGE THROUGH THEIR CHANNELS AND NETWORKS AND RUNNING ADVERTISEMENT CAMPAIGNS WITH FREE ICE CREAM TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF POWER U'S WORK. IN JULY 2019, WE SUPPORTED THEM DURING A SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ON FUNDING FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR.ON DECEMBER 16, 2019, ADVANCEMENT PROJECT AND THE ALLIANCE FOR EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE HOSTED A NATIONAL POLICE-FREE SCHOOL CAMPAIGN CONVENING WITH OVER 40 ADULT AND YOUTH ORGANIZERS FROM 14 CITIES THROUGHOUT THE US AND CANADA ALL WORKING TO END THE SCHOOL-TO-PRISON PIPELINE AND REMOVE POLICE FROM SCHOOLS. WHILE ENVISIONING THE NEXT PHASE OF THE NATIONAL POLICE-FREE SCHOOLS CAMPAIGN, THE CONVENING PROVIDED A SPACE FOR ADVOCATES TO: ASSESS THE LAST TWO YEARS OF #POLICEFREESCHOOLS ORGANIZING AND IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES TO ADVANCE THE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN IN 2020 AND BEYOND; SHARPEN AND COORDINATE ORGANIZING AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES TO FURTHER ADVANCE LOCAL CAMPAIGNS WITH NATIONAL IMPACT; AND IDENTIFY AND DEEPEN OUR COLLECTIVE UNDERSTANDING AND RESPOND TO EMERGING ISSUES IN THE SCHOOL-TO-PRISON PIPELINE WORK.
