ACC-US SUPPORTS COMMUNITY-BASED CONSERVATION PROGRAMS THAT FOCUS ON INCREASING BIODIVERSITY IN EAST AFRICA - SPECIFICALLY KENYA. PROGRAMMATIC SUCCESSES IN FY2019 THAT ACC-US HELPED TO SUPPORT INCLUDE: AFRICAN CONSERVATION CENTRE (ACC) - TO PREVENT HUMAN/WILDLIFE CONFLICT AT THE TWALA TENEBO CULTURAL CENTRE, ACC PROVIDED FUNDS TO BUILD AN ELECTRIC FENCE AROUND THE 40 ACRES FACILITY. THE TWALA WOMEN HOSTED 3,085 TOURISTS WHO BROUGHT IN MUCH NEEDED INCOME TO THE WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES VIA LODGING, GUIDED BABOON WALKS AND BEADWORK SALES. ACC-US ALSO SUPPORTED WOMEN GROUPS IN AMBOSELI BY PURCHASING BEADED ORNAMENTS AND DOG COLLARS TO SELL IN THE U.S. ADDITIONALLY, ACC-US SUPPORTED ACC IN MAINTAINING A COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, PROVIDED FUNDS TO DEVELOP PLANS FOR AN OFFICE EXPANSION AND SUPPORTED A NEW EDUCATION PROGRAM. AMBOSELI CONSERVATION PROGRAM (ACP) - ACP HAS MONITORED AND CONSERVED AMBOSELI'S WILDLIFE AND ITS ECOSYSTEM TO THE BENEFIT OF ITS PEOPLE FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS. THANKS TO GENEROUS GRANTS FROM THE LIZ CLAIBORNE ART ORTENBERG FOUNDATION IN 2019, ACP HAS BEEN ENGAGED AT BOTH A NATIONAL AND COUNTY LEVEL IN STRATEGIES, LAND PLANNING AND POLICY DEVELOPMENTS THAT BEAR ON THE FUTURE OF WILDLIFE IN KENYA. PROGRAMMATIC SUCCESSES INCLUDE: CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF THE AMBOSELI ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT PLAN (AEMP) 2018-2028 DEVELOPED BY ACC AND ACP TO TACKLE THE THREE BIGGEST THREATS TO MIGRATORY WILDLIFE OF THE AFRICAN SAVANNAS, NAMELY LAND SUBDIVISION, SETTLEMENT AND RANGELAND FRAGMENTATION AND DEGRADATION. ADDITIONALLY, ACP HAS DEVELOPED LAND USE AND GRAZING PLANS FOR THREE GROUP RANCHES, FURTHER DEVELOPED A RANGELANDS AND RESTORATION PROGRAM UNDER THE AEMP, DEVELOPED AN INTEGRATED DATABASE TO REDUCE HUMAN WILDLIFE CONFLICTS, CREATED A GRAPHIC MONITORING AND FORECASTING SYSTEM FOR TRACKING PASTURE CONDITIONS IN THE AMBOSELI REGION, COLLECTED DATA TO MAP AND TRACK SETTLEMENTS AND MOVEMENT OF WILDLIFE AND LIVESTOCK AND NEW MITIGATION STRATEGIES; PROVIDED ANTI- POACHING MEDIATION; TRAINED RESOURCE ASSESSORS IN DIGITIZED MONITORING, MENTORED YOUNG KENYAN CONSERVATIONISTS; AND SHARED INFORMATION THROUGH PUBLICATIONS, LECTURES AND OUTREACH. LAND & LIFE FOUNDATION (LLF) - THANKS TO GENEROUS INDIVIDUAL DONORS, ACC-US SUPPORTED LLF'S WILDLIFE WARRIOR PROGRAM AND THEIR WORK TO SUPPORT THE GANAKO, EMBITI, AND ESITETI PRIMARY SCHOOLS. THIS YEAR, THEY BUILT A CLASSROOM AND RAIN-WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM AT EMBITI PRIMARY SCHOOL THAT SUPPORTS 154 STUDENTS, A KITCHEN AT OLOLOMEI PRIMARY SCHOOL THAT SUPPORTS 320 KIDS, A LIBRARY, DORMITORY AND CLASSROOM AT ESITETI PRIMARY SCHOOL THAT SUPPORTS 501 KIDS AND STARTED PLANS FOR BUILDING A KITCHEN FOR GANAKO PRIMARY SCHOOL SERVING 510 STUDENTS. FUNDS THROUGH ACC-US ALSO SUPPORTED LLF'S WILDLIFE WARRIOR PROGRAM THAT PROMOTES INTER-GENERATIONAL KNOWLEDGE SHARING, INNOVATIVE THINKING, AND PROACTIVE WILDLIFE CONSERVATION. 550 CHILDREN ARE IN WILDLIFE WARRIOR CLUBS LANDSCAPE & CONSERVATION MENTORS ORGANIZATION (LCMO) - THANKS TO DONOR SUPPORT, ACC-US HAS BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE SOME GENERAL ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT TO OUR NEWEST PARTNER IN CONSERVATION, LCMO. LCMO HAS TWO MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS: WATU, SIMBA NA MAZINGIRA (WASIMA) AND VIJANA NA MAZINGIRA (VIMA) OPERATING IN REMOTE VILLAGES AROUND KATAVI NATIONAL PARK AND OTHER PARTS OF WESTERN TANZANIA. OTHER PROGRAMS THAT ARE INTEGRATED WITH THESE TWO PROGRAMS INCLUDE A DAY IN THE PARK, GREENING MPIMBWE AND A STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAM. SOUTH RIFT ASSOCIATION OF LANDOWNERS (SORALO)/REBUILDING THE PRIDE - REBUILDING THE PRIDE (RTP), RUN BY THE SOUTH RIFT ASSOCIATION OF LANDOWNERS (SORALO), A MAASAI LANDOWNER GROUP, AIMS TO INCREASE LION AND OTHER CARNIVORE NUMBERS ACROSS THE SOUTH RIFT AREA OF KENYA. THE PROGRAM REDUCES HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT, PREVENTS RANGE FRAGMENTATION AND MAINTAINS HEALTHY PREY NUMBERS. THANKS TO GENEROUS DONATIONS FROM LIVING DESERT ZOO, AKRON ZOO AND DONORS, ACC-US CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR MOBILE MONITORING UNITS THAT TRACK LION AND LIVESTOCK MOVEMENTS, IDENTIFY CONFLICT HOTSPOTS, PROVIDE INFORMATION TO LIVESTOCK HERDERS, AND REPORT CASES OF LOST LIVESTOCK AND DEPREDATION TO THE RAPID RESPONSE TEAM.
