THE AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE IS A VIEWER SUPPORTED ARTS ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO THE PRESENTATION OF THE MOVING PICTURE IN ALL ITS FORMS, SPANNING THE FULL RANGE OF AMERICAN & INTERNATIONAL CINEMA, AT TWO HISTORIC THEATRES IN LOS ANGELES, WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART PROJECTION & SOUND.
THE CINEMATHEQUE ENSURES PUBLIC ACCESS TO LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL FILMS OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE AND OF HISTORIC, CULTURAL OR EDUCATIONAL IMPORTANCE. PROGRAMS INCLUDE CLASSICS OF AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL CINEMA, NEW INDEPENDENT AND WORLD FILM,INCLUDING RARE NITRATE & ARCHIVAL PRINTS, 70MM, DIGITAL LASER PROJECTION, ETC. WITH POST-SCREENING FILMMAKER DISCUSSIONS WITH THE AUDIENCE. FILMS ARE PRESENTED IN STATE-OF-THE-ART THEATRES AS THEY WERE MEANT TO BE SEEN AND HEARD, PROVIDING ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCES. SINCE 1999, MORE THAN 9,000 PROGRAMS PRESENTED AT THE HISTORIC EGYPTIAN THEATRE AND AERO THEATRE HAVE INCLUDED OVER 11,200 FEATURES AND 3,000 SHORTS AND FEATURED OVER 6,200 GUESTS. CINEMATHEQUE COLLABORATORS INCLUDE AMPAS, AFI, BFI, CINEMATHEQUE FRANCAIS, GOETHE INSTITUT, HFPA, UCLA ARCHIVES & THE CONSULATES OF MANY COUNTRIES. THE CINEMATHEQUE ALSO PRESENTS SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS & CHILDREN. MAJOR FILM FESTIVALS ARE HELD AT THE EGYPTIAN, INCLUDING BEYOND FEST, CINECON, THE TCM FESTIVAL, OUTFEST FUSION & FESTIVALS FROM MANY OTHER COUNTRIES. THE CINEMATHEQUE HAS A WEB-SITE & PUBLISHES 12 CALENDARS ABOUT ITS PROGRAMS, MAILED AND DISTRIBUTED AROUND LOS ANGELES. AN E-MAIL NEWSLETTER IS SENT TO 60,000+ PEOPLE. TOURS ON THE HISTORY OF THE EGYPTIAN ARE REGULARLY CONDUCTED BY DOCENTS. THE CINEMATHEQUE AWARD (GIVEN TO A FILMMAKER MAKING A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE ART OF THE MOVING PICTURE) WAS PRESENTED TO BRADLEY COOPER ON NOVEMBER 29, 2018 AT THE BEVERLY HILTON. THE 4TH ANNUAL SID GRAUMAN AWARD (SID GRAUMAN WAS THE FOUNDER OF THE EGYPTIAN THEATRE IN 1922.)
