THE SISTERS IN CONTROL REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE PROGRAM SUPPORTS POLICY, UTILIZES PROGRAM, WORKS WITH ADVISORY COUNCILS, COMMISSIONS AND BOARDS TO SECURE REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS. THROUGH SB 464, DIGNITY IN PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH AND SB 188, THE CROWN ACT (NATURAL HAIRSTYLES DISCRIMINATION) BWW INFLUENCES THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF WOMEN IN CALIFORNIA. BLACK EXPECTANT AND NEW PARENTS, BLACK AND MULTI-RACIAL WOMEN CHOOSING TO WEAR THEIR HAIR NATURAL IN THE WORK PLACE ALL BENEFIT FROM THESE POLICIES. BWW TRAVELED TO SACRAMENTO WITH A BUS FULL OF VOLUNTEERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS, PICKING UP WOMEN IN BAKERSFIELD, FRESNO AND OAKLAND ON THE WAY TO SACRAMENTO. ONE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED AND NINETY-TWO (1,692) BWW STAKEHOLDERS AND VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATED IN OUR EDUCATION AND OUTREACH ON POLICIES THAT IMPACT BLACK WOMEN AND GIRLS. THE GET SMART B4U GET SEXY (GS B4U GS) PROGRAM USES PEER ADVOCATES TO SHIFT ATTITUDES ON SEX AND SEXUALITY THROUGH COMPREHENSIVE SEX AND SEXUALITY EDUCATION, PROMOTING SMART AS SEXY AND MAKING SEX SMART. PROGRAM STAFF PARTNERED WITH LOCKE HIGH SCHOOL AND BET PROGRAM TO CONDUCT LOCKE GIRL MAGIC TO PUBLISH A SELF-ESTEEM CURRICULUM FOR BLACK GIRLS. GET SMART STAFF DID OUTREACH, CONDUCTED WORKSHOPS, LED DANCE CLASSES AND TOUCHED THE LIVES OF BLACK GIRLS IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS IN PASADENA, INGLEWOOD AND SOUTH LOS ANGELES. ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY (1,330) YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN GET SMART B4U GET SEXY PROGRAM ACTIVITIES. BWW PARTICIPATED IN A HIV/AIDS PREVENTION EDUCATION RESEARCH PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UCLA - EBAN THAT REACHED 10 WOMEN PER MONTH DURING 2019, REACHING A TOTAL OF 120 WOMEN IN 2019. BWW THE BACKBONE ORGANIZATION FOR THE SOUTH LOS ANGELES AFRICAN AMERICAN INFANT & MATERNAL MORTALITY COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM, WITH MORE THAN 60 COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVISTS PARTICIPATION, OUR SUPPORT OF THE COALITION IS BUILDING CAPACITY OF GRASSROOTS LEADERS TO SHIFT CULTURE SURROUNDING BLACK MATERNAL AND INFANT HEALTH. IN ADDITION OUR PROGRAM MANAGER WAS ABLE TO CONDUCT PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS WITH CEDAR SINAI AND WATTS HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION CLIENTS ON OPTIMIZING PERINATAL HEALTH CARE, REACHING 25 EXPECTANT WOMEN. BWW IS A MEMBER OF STAND LA (STANDING TOGETHER AGAINST NEIGHBORHOOD DRILLING LOS ANGELES), AN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COALITION OF COMMUNITY GROUPS THAT ENGAGES, EDUCATES AND EMPOWERS COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON THE HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF LIVING NEAR OIL DRILLING SITES TO STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT TO LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL APPOINTED AND ELECTED PERSONNEL THAT MAKE DECISIONS SURROUNDING OIL DRILLING SITES. PHONE BANKS, OUTREACH, AND ALLIES REACHED APPROXIMATELY 300 PARTICIPANTS WITH A TOWN HALL LED BY THE COALITION OF 100 BLACK WOMEN, AND ENGAGED 10 ADDITIONAL BLACK WOMEN'S ORGANIZATIONS IN SOUTH LOS ANGELES. TAKING STOCK/HEALTHY HAIR INITIATIVE CONDUCTS COMMUNITY DRIVEN RESEARCH BY WORKING WITH BEAUTY PROFESSIONALS, HAIR STYLISTS AND NAIL TECHNICIANS TO STUDY THE IMPACT OF CHEMICAL USE ON THEIR HEALTH STATUS. BWW TEAM RECRUITED 70 WOMEN INTO OUR STUDY, AND 105 WOMEN TOOK OUR ON-LINE SURVEY. IN ADDITION, PROGRAM STAFF BEGAN A PROJECT ACTIVITY CALLED BEHIND THE CHAIR, GIVING ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO THE BEAUTY PROFESSIONALS IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY. BEHIND THE CHAIR HONORED FIVE HIGH PROFILE HAIR STYLISTS WORKING IN LOS ANGELES. APPROXIMATELY 80 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE AWARD PARTY WHERE EDUCATION AND REFRESHMENTS WERE SHARED. BWW BEGAN OUR CENSUS OUTREACH AND EDUCATION DURING 2019 TOUCHING 38,000 PLUS COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN HARD TO COUNT COMMUNITIES VIA TEXT MESSAGES, PHONE CALLS AND TABLING AT HOLIDAY EVENTS. THE SISTERS IN CONTROL REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE PROGRAM CONVENED ITS ANNUAL CONFERENCE 400 AGAIN EXPLORING IN DEPTH THE CAUSAL FACTORS IMPACTING THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH STATUS OF BLACK WOMEN RESULTING FROM EPIGENETICS. THE CONFERENCE ATTRACTED 350 REGISTRANTS IN 2019. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND VOTER EDUCATION ACTIVITIES INCREASE THE ELECTORAL AND POLITICAL POWER OF BLACK WOMEN THROUGH VOTER EDUCATION, REGISTRATION AND OUTREACH DURING AND BETWEEN ELECTIONS. MORE THAN 25,000 PEOPLE WERE TOUCHED VIA OUR VREAM TEAM WITH VOTER EDUCATION, GET OUT THE VOTE, ACCOUNTABILITY AND CENSUS MESSAGES. INTERNET QUILT KEEPS PACE WITH THE CYBER WORLD THROUGH WWW.BWWLA.ORG (12,354 VISITORS), MANY SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS (MORE THAN 198,000 VIA FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, LINKED IN & ALIGNABLE) AND COMMUNICATES WITH OUR COMMUNITY VIA A WEEKLY ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER (6,756 E-MAIL ADDRESSES).

OUR SISTERS IN MOTION PROGRAM WORKS TO DECREASE THE INCIDENTS OF HEART DISEASE, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, DIABETES AND OBESITY THROUGH LIFESTYLE CHANGES THAT INCLUDE REGULAR EXERCISE, INCREASED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND A HEALTHY DIET. KITCHEN DIVAS CONDUCTS FOOD DEMONSTRATIONS AND HOSTS INFORMATION TABLES AT COMMUNITY EVENTS, LARGE AND SMALL (6,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS PARTICIPATED OR VISITED WITH OUR KITCHEN DIVA TEAM IN 2019). COMMUNITY CHEFS ALSO LEAD WORKSHOPS, HEALTH EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES ATTRACTING 645 PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS AND PROVIDING THEM WITH INFORMATION AND EDUCATION SUPPORTING LIFESTYLE CHANGES VIA NUTRITION AND EXERCISE. THE DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM - CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE, CHANGE YOUR LIFE IS A PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH EMPLOYERS AND COMMUNITY INSTITUTIONS OFFERING LIFESTYLE COACHING AND HEALTH EDUCATION TO PREVENT TYPE 2 DIABETES AT THE WORK SITE AND IN THE COMMUNITY. DURING 2019, BWW OFFERED THE DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM AT TWO SITES WITH 25 PARTICIPANTS.

SISTERS @ EIGHT IS A MONTHLY ROUNDTABLE BRINGING A WEALTH OF INFORMATION TO HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, LEADERSHIP, ACTIVISTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO HELP EMPOWER, MOBILIZE, AND ORGANIZE TOWARD ADVOCACY. THE MOTHER'S DAY TEA, BRING A BROTHER TO BREAKFAST AND INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY ARE SPECIAL EVENTS HELD UNDER THE SISTERS @ EIGHT PROGRAM ACTIVITY UMBRELLA IN COMBINATION WITH THE MONTHLY TOWN HALL SISTERS @ EIGHT HAD MORE THAN 650 PARTICIPANTS DURING 2019.
