CALIFORNIA LATINAS FOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE (CLRJ) IS A STATEWIDE ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO HONORING THE EXPERIENCES OF LATINAS TO UPHOLD OUR DIGNITY, OUR BODIES, SEXUALITY, AND FAMILIES. WE BUILD LATINAS' POWER AND CULTIVATE LEADERSHIP THROUGH COMMUNITY EDUCATION, POLICY ADVOCACY, AND COMMUNITY-INFORMED RESEARCH TO ACHIEVE REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE.
PROGRAM NAME: POLICY AND ADVOCACYPOLICY ADVOCACY IS ONE OF CLRJ'S CORE STRATEGIES AND PROGRAM AREAS. CLRJ EDUCATES POLICYMAKERS ON ISSUE AREAS THAT IMPACT THE 7.5 MILLION CALIFORNIA LATINAS, SERVES AS A THOUGHT LEADER AND COLLABORATOR WITH STATE AND NATIONAL ADVOCATES, TRAINS LEADERS ON THE POLICY PROCESS AND HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES, AS WELL AS CONDUCTS STATE AND FEDERAL POLICY ADVOCACY TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF LATINAS/XS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN CALIFORNIA. IN 2019, CLRJ CO-SPONSORED THREE LEGISLATIVE BILLS AND ONE BUDGET REQUEST, AND ENGAGED IN FEDERAL ADVOCACY TO SAFEGUARD CRITICAL FEDERAL PROGRAMS, AND SUPPORTED ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNERS WITH A VARIETY OF OTHER LEGISLATIVE BILLS. CLRJ'S POLICY ADVOCACY TEAM SERVED ON VARIOUS COALITIONS AND ADVISORIES AND ENGAGED FORTY-SIX(46) POLICYMAKERS EIGHTY-NINE TIMES (89) THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. MOST NOTABLY, CLRJ WAS SUCCESSFUL IN PASSING SB 24, THE COLLEGE STUDENTS RIGHT TO ACCESS ACT, WHICH REQUIRES ALL ON-CAMPUS STUDENT HEALTH CENTERS AT PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES TO OFFER MEDICATION ABORTION FOR STUDENTS BY JANUARY 1, 2023. THIS WOULD ENSURE COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, SAFE, AND EARLY ABORTION CARE WITHOUT DELAYS AND DIFFICULTIES THAT DISPROPORTIONATELY INTERFERE WITH THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND WELL-BEING OF FEMALE STUDENTS AND PARTICULARLY IMPACT STUDENTS OF COLOR AND LOW INCOME STUDENTS.
PROGRAM NAME: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTCLRJ'S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM BUILDS LATINAS' POLITICAL POWER BY UPLIFTING THE STORIES AND VOICES OF COMMUNITY-BASED LATINAS THROUGH COMMUNITY EDUCATION, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR MOBILIZATION AND POLITICAL ACTIVISM. IN 2019, CLRJ REACHED OVER 35,000 PEOPLE AND MOBILIZED OVER 750 THROUGH LARGE AND SMALL SCALE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS. FOR EXAMPLE, CLRJ ENGAGED OUR LATINAS FOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE CHAPTERS IN LOS ANGELES AND SAN DIEGO TO PUT ON EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR OUR COMMUNITIES, DO COMMUNITY OUTREACH, HOST OUR ANNUAL HEALING OUR HEARTS STORYTELLING EVENT, AND CONDUCT IN-DISTRICT LEGISLATIVE VISITS TO SUPPORT OUR POLICY PRIORITIES. LASTLY WE ENGAGED 275 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN SOUTHEAST LOS ANGELES AS PART OF OUR VOTER ENGAGEMENT WORK AND TO INFORM THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR NEW COMMUNITY ORGANIZING PILOT PROGRAM.
PROJECT NAME: REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE MOVEMENT-BUILDINGREPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE MOVEMENT BUILDING IS ONE OF CLRJ'S STRATEGIES TO UPLIFT LATINA/X VOICES WITHIN THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, RIGHTS, AND JUSTICE MOVEMENTS AND ACROSS INTERSECTING MOVEMENTS FIGHTING FOR IMMIGRANT RIGHTS, HEALTH ACCESS, ECONOMIC JUSTICE, AND LGBTQIA+ LIBERATION, WHICH ENHANCES THE IMPACT OF ALL OF CLRJ'S PROGRAMS IN ACHIEVING OUR OVERALL MISSION. CLRJ COLLABORATES WITH DIVERSE PARTNERS, PROVIDES TRAININGS TO ALLIES, ACTIVELY PARTICIPATES IN COALITIONS, ATTENDS AND PRESENTS AT CONFERENCES, AND PARTICIPATES IN STRATEGIC CONVENINGS. IN 2019, CLRJ CONTINUED TO BUILD AN ARCHIVE OF OVER 70 LATINA/X REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE STORIES AND HELD AN RJ STORYTELLING EVENT ON THE BORDER WITH SDSU STAFF AND STUDENTS, COLLABORATED AND/OR BUILT OR MAINTAINED AN ALLIED RELATIONSHIP WITH A TOTAL OF 98 ORGANIZATIONS, NETWORKS, AND/OR COALITIONS. CLRJ'S COLLABORATIVE WORK AROUND OUR PRIORITY ISSUES INCLUDED PARTICIPATION ON THE CALIFORNIA LIFTING CHILDREN OUT OF POVERTY TASK FORCE WHICH DRAFTED POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE STATE LEGISLATURE. CLRJ ALSO CONTINUED TO BE A PART OF THE NATIONAL WORKING GROUP THAT IS LEADING EFFORTS TO BRING ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES OVER THE COUNTER (OCS/OTC). CLRJ ALSO CONTINUED PROVIDING TRAININGS ON REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE, FOR UNIVERSITIES, OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, AND AT CONFERENCES..
