Organizations Filed Purposes:
Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) empowers Central Americans and all immigrants by defending human and civil rights, working for social and economic justice and promoting cultural diversity.
FOR 35 YEARS, CARECEN HAS CHAMPIONED THE RIGHTS OF CENTRAL AMERICAN & LATINO IMMIGRANTS, BUILDING A COMMUNITY THAT IS PROACTIVE, AWARE OF ITS RIGHTS AND VIGILANT OF ITS INTEREST.
Legal Department: In 2019 the Legal Department provided information, legal advice and services to over 25,000 people. The legal department provided 1) free information forums regarding various immigration issues, including eligibility for various immigration benefits (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals/DACA, legal permanent residence, employment authorization, asylum, and naturalization, and removal defense matters), 2) legal advice and free or low cost services included assistance with Protected Status (TPS), naturalization, family-based immigration processes (including family petitions, consular processing & adjustment of status) employment authorization, VAWA/U-Vis, DACA, asylum, as well as representation in removal proceedings for adults and children.
Parent & Youth Center: The Parent & Youth Center provides leadership development training, advocacy and policy activities and academic enrichment programs. The department offers programs to community parents and school aged children. The programs assisted approximately 1,000 families with its activities. For the youth, the department provided a College Head Start and Leadership Development programs. For parents, the department provided a leadership development program, English as a Second Language (ESL) and computer literacy and arts and crafts classes. All of the programs offer culturally relevant services for Latino immigrant families.
Day Labor Center: CARECENs Day Labor Center offers workforce development for an average of 100 workers daily through its Economic Development Program. At the center workers can get temporary work, receive health education and services, assistance with wage theft claims, ESL classes, special skills workshops, conflict resolution training and leadership training. The Center assists with all aspects of the job search and hiring process with workers and employers to ensure fairness. The center facilitates a temporary work environment with restrooms, water, and protection from the elements where workers have an equal opportunity to be employed and have institutional support when they are treated fraudulently.
