THE ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED IN 1989 BY FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AMY LETHBRIDGE AND INCORPORATED IN 1991. FROM 1996 UNTIL THE START OF FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2017, THE ORGANIZATION OPERATED AS A DIVISION UNDER MOUNTAINS RECREATION AND CONSERVATION AUTHORITY. THE ORGANIZATION NAME UNTIL THE START OF FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2017 WAS MOUNTAINS EDUCATION PROGRAM.
CNC RESIDENTIAL OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAMTHE CNC RESIDENTIAL OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM AT KING GILLETTE RANCH AND TEMESCAL GATEWAY PARK PROVIDES SAFE, CHALLENGING, FUN, AND DYNAMIC EXPERIENCES FOR THE 5TH AND 6TH GRADERS THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. OUR THREE-DAY TO FIVE-DAY PROGRAM TYPICALLY RUN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON INCLUDING LESSONS, ACTIVITIES, AND HIKES. CNC'S OUTDOOR RESIDENTIAL CAMPS SERVICED 1,038 PARTICIPANTS DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING IN JUNE 30, 2019.OTHER PROGRAMS - CNC TRAINING INSTITUTETHE COMMUNITY TRAINING INSTITUTE FOR THE PROTECTION AND INTERPRETATION OF OUR PARKS AND WATERSHEDS IS A COMPREHENSIVE INTERPRETIVE AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. THIS WILL BE AN ADDED BENEFIT TO GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS FROM UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES WHO CURRENTLY PARTICIPATE IN CNC PROGRAMS. TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED BY BOTH MRCA AND CNC STAFF WITH THE APPROPRIATE CERTIFICATIONS AND TRAINING AND OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS. IN SOME CASES, SEATS IN A CLASS WILL BE SET ASIDE FOR FEE-BASED PARTICIPANTS TO OFFSET COSTS. SEATS MAY ALSO BE SET ASIDE FOR VOLUNTEERS AT A FREE OR REDUCED RATE AS A RECRUITMENT AND REWARD FOR THEIR SERVICES.OTHER PROGRAMS - TRANSIT TO TRAILS"TRANSIT TO TRAILS" IS A FREE COASTAL SHUTTLE PROGRAM IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY FOCUSING ON UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES IN THE REGION; TARGET LOCATIONS INCLUDE PACOIMA, CHINATOWN, AND COMPTON. CNC PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN THE TARGET LOCATIONS TO DEVELOP THE PROGRAM. SUCH PROGRAMMING INCLUDES INTERPRETIVE NATURALIST GUIDED TOURS AND ACTIVITIES THAT FOCUS ON VARIOUS TOPICS RELATED TO THE COAST SUCH AS SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS ECOLOGY, WILDLIFE, MARINE LIFE, OCEANOGRAPHY, THE IMPORTANCE OF COASTAL AND MOUNTAIN PROTECTION, TIDE POOLS, AND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN LOS ANGELES WATERSHEDS AND THE OCEAN. OTHER PROGRAMS - OTHEROTHER PROGRAMS THAT WERE CONDUCTED DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2019 INCLUDE THE NATURALISTS EXPLORERS PROGRAM, NATIONAL PARK SERVICE CHESEBORO RESTORATION PROJECT, AND TRANSIT TO TRAILS. TO HIGHLIGHT A FEW, THE NATURALIST EXPLORERS IS A SIXTEEN-LESSON PROGRAM THAT INTRODUCES YOUTHTO NATURAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCES, OUTDOOR AND CAMPING SKILLS, PRINCIPLES OF INTERPRETATION, PARK CAREERS IN THE FIELD, COMMUNITY ADVOCACY, PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT. EACH PROGRAM IS FACILITATED BY A NATURALIST WHO TRANSFORMS THE MOUNTAINS, COAST, AND URBAN PARKS INTOOUTDOOR CLASSROOMS. AT THE END OF THE NATURALIST EXPLORERS PROGRAM, GRADUATES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR THE OUTDOOR LEADER POSITION WITH CNC. THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE RESTORATION PROJECT IS AN ANNUAL YEAR-LONG PAID INTERNSHIP THAT FOCUSES ON HABITAT AND ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION. AFTER COMPLETION OF A MINIMUM OF 640 HOURS, INTERNS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR NON-COMPETITIVE HIRING BY FEDERAL LAND MANAGEMENT AGENCIES. THE TRANSIT TO TRAIL PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE BUS RIDES FROM URBAN COMMUNITY HUBS TO NATURAL AREAS AROUND LA, SUCH AS TOPANGA BEACH, FRANKLIN CANYON PARK, AND VARIOUS LOCATIONS WITHIN THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS. EACH TRIP IS LED BY A SEASONED NATURALIST, WHO PROVIDES INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMMING SPECIFIC TO THE DESTINATION.
WODOCTHE WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS CLASSROOM (WODOC) IN FRANKLIN CANYON PARK HAS INTRODUCED YOUTH IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES TO LOS ANGELES' NATURAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCES. CNC PROVIDES FIELD TRIPS THAT ARE FREE OF COST TO TITLE I SCHOOLS THAT SERVE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AT THE WILLIAM O.DOUGLAS OUTDOOR CLASSROOM (WODOC) IN FRANKLIN CANYON PARK. FIELD TRIPS ARE LED BY TRAINED CNC VOLUNTEERS AND FEATURE A GUIDED HIKE AND STANDARDS-ALIGNED CURRICULUM THAT SPOTLIGHTS TONGVA CULTURE AND LOCAL ECOLOGY. FOR FISCAL YEAR ENDING IN JUNE 30, 2019, 3,847 STUDENTS WERE SERVED.
MRCA 19/20COMMUNITY NATURE CONNECTION PROVIDES PUBLIC INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS ON PUBLIC PARKLAND OWNED AND MANAGED BY THE MOUNTAINS RECREATION AND CONSERVATION AUTHORITY, WITH WHICH CNC HAS A RECIPROCAL SERVICES AGREEMENT. THIS GRANT FROM THE MRCA SUPPORTS THE RSA IN SUPPORT OF THOSE PUBLIC ACCESS AND INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS NOT FUNDED BY OTHER GRANTS. THIS INCLUDES NATURAL ANDCULTURAL HISTORY PROGRAMS AT EVENTS, CAMPFIRE PROGRAMS, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND OUTREACH AND NEW PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT.
