IN 2019, CONSUMER WATCHDOG CAMPAIGN (CWC) CONDUCTED RESEARCH AND MONITORED THE IMPACT ON THE PUBLIC OF CONSUMER PROTECTION ISSUES, FOCUSING ON PATIENT SAFETY REFORM AND CIVIL JUSTICE. CWC RESEARCHED ISSUES RELATED TO A POTENTIAL BALLOT MEASURE TO UPDATE CALIFORNIA'S 4-DECADE-OLD LAW LIMITING THE LEGAL RIGHTS OF PATIENTS HARMED BY MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE. THAT WORK CULMINATED IN THE DECEMBER 2019 LAUNCH OF THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE FAIRNESS FOR INJURED PATIENTS ACT, A CITIZEN INITIATIVE MEASURE AIMED FOR THE CALIFORNIA BALLOT THAT WOULD ADJUST THE $250,000 CAP ON COMPENSATION FOR MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE VICTIMS FOR INFLATION, AND ALLOW JUDGES AND JURIES TO DECIDE FAIR COMPENSATION IN CASES INVOLVING CATASTROPHIC INJURIES OR DEATH. CWC EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ABOUT HOW THE CAP CLOSES THE COURTROOM DOOR AND DENIES CALIFORNIA FAMILIES JUSTICE, AND ABOUT ITS DISPROPORTIONATE IMPACT ON WOMEN AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. CWC SHARED THE STORIES OF FAMILIES HARMED BY MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE ACROSS CALIFORNIA TO ILLUSTRATE THE NEED TO UPDATE THE CAP.
