MEANINGFUL OUTCOMES Disability Voices United advocates for meaningful outcomes that matter to us, which was our largest service accomplishment, as measured by expenses. People with disabilities can achieve meaningful outcomes if they are provided the tools, methods, and support for inclusion in the community through education, employment, socialization, health care, and housing. In 2019, DVU built the Communication Disabilities Access Network to bring together Californians with disabilities so they can access communication supports and their communities. DVU created a website (theinterchange.org) to inform the disability community on their rights, surveyed over 200 individuals with disabilities and their families, and explored barriers to communication by underserved communities. DVU also advocated for inclusive education, employment, and housing and worked in partnership with other organizations to achieve these goals.
EQUITY Our second largest service accomplishment as measured by expenses concerned eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in services for people with developmental disabilities. DVU co-sponsored a series of trainings throughout California to ensure underserved language communities are able to fully participate in the Self- Determination Program. The Cross-Cultural Independent Facilitator trainings was conducted throughout the state in multiple languages and trained over 100 people. DVU published a report on racial and ethnic disparities in regional center services. DVU also advocated for equitable services at the state level and participated in workgroups with the Department of Developmental Services.
CHOICE AND CONTROL Our third largest service accomplishment as measured by expenses concerns our efforts to ensure that people with disabilities have choice and control over their lives. This includes implementation of California's Self- Determination Program and the encouragement of supported decision-making for people with disabilities. In 2019, DVU led the Parent-to-Parent Supported Decision-Making Message and Training Development Program in which we conducted focus groups of 50 parents of teens and young adults on alternatives to conservatorship and supported decision-making. DVU also published two books on California's Self- Determination Program and trained thousands of individuals statewide. DVU also co-sponsored a statewide conference on the program attended by over 450 people.
