We are dedicated to the vision of a world where documentary creators flourish. Through our work, we connect audiences with the best of the form, provide resources, create community, and defend the rights and freedoms of documentary artists, activists and journalists around the globe. We do this work because we believe that documentaries enrich and deepen our culture, fostering a more informed and connected world.
The International Documentary Association, ("IDA") is dedicated to building and serving the needs of a thriving documentary culture.
Enterprise Fund Enterprise Journalism Fund provides research and development grants and production grants to documentary films that examine contemporary issue and use journalistic practice in the production of the films. In addition to general support and mentorship to filmmakers, the fund awarded $855,000 in grants to twenty-three (23) film projects ranging from $15,000 to $100,000 in FYE 6/30/2020.Pare Lorentz Pare Lorentz Documentary Fund provides production support for the creation of original independent documentary films that illuminate pressing issues in the United States. New York Community Trust has supported this fund since 2016 and in February of 2020 NYCT renewed their support with another grant of $300,000, which is to be spent over multiple years. IDA awarded grants in FYE 6/30/2020 ranging from $17,500 to $20,000 to 5 film projects totaling $95,000.Editorial "Documentary" magazine & documentary.org - This quarterly print and year-round online publication offers essential information keeping readers on track with the industry. Print issues are sent to all IDA members and more than 250 other individuals and organizations in the United States and 18 countries around the world. Another approximately 1,600 copies are distributed via newsstands, bookstores and other venues in the United States and Canada. IDA's website is a vital portal into the industry that provides up-to-date information and opportunities to connect with the documentary film world.Screening Series IDA's Screening Series presented 60 of the year's best documentary films to nearly 5,500 people including members of documentary and film industry guilds and organizations.DocuDayDocuDay is IDA's annual screening of the year's Oscar nominated feature and short documentaries. More than 530 attendees had the opportunity to watch the films and meet the filmmakers and film subjects.Advocacy IDA is at the forefront of protecting and advancing the legal rights of documentary artists, activists and journalists. Recent efforts have focused on promoting net neutrality, fair use and government arts funding, as well as defending filmmakers' first amendment rights.DocuClub A work-in-progress screening series offering the public and members of the documentary film community advance access to new projects, and the opportunity to provide feedback and participate in intimate behind-the-scenes conversations with filmmakers and creators. In in FYE 6/30/2020 IDA hosted six (6) work-in-progress screenings. IDA Awards IDA Documentary Awards is the world's preeminent annual event honoring excellence in documentary by recognizing the most outstanding documentary films and filmmakers.Fiscal SponsorshipFiscal Sponsorship: IDA provides fiscal sponsorship for approved documentary films and related projects and accepts grants and donations to support worthwhile projects that might otherwise have difficulty in finding funding. In FYE 6/30/2020, IDA received 1896 individual, corporate, government and foundation donations in support of 238 sponsored projects. Additionally, IDA made grants to filmmakers for this service.
Getting RealGetting Real is a unique gathering of filmmakers and industry professionals. It provides a much-needed space for the field to hold constructive conversations, build lasting relationships, and tackle ethical, sustainability, creative, production and distribution challenges facing our growing community. Getting Real is a bi-annual conference that serves nearly 1,000 attendees during the three (3) day conference. The gap year between conferences serves as time for field-building through roundtables, focus groups and field studies which help inform the next edition of Getting Real.Educational SeminarsOur year-round series of seminars, panels and workshops focusing on the art, craft and business of documentary filmmaking. IDA produced over fifteen (15) educational seminars and workshops in in FYE 6/30/2020.
