KEIRO'S MISSION IS TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF SENIOR LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY. IN THIS COMMITMENT TO OUR MISSION, "OUR COMMUNITY" IS DEFINED AS JAPANESE AMERICAN AND JAPANESE OLDER ADULTS AND THEIR FAMILIES, CAREGIVERS AND THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT
KEIRO'S MISSION IS TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF SENIOR LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY. (SEE PART III LINE 1)
KEIRO'S KEY PROGRAMS FOR THE YEAR ENDED OCTOBER 31, 2019 INCLUDED:1) CONDUCTED OR ORGANIZED WELLNESS PROGRAMS, HEALTH SCREENINGS AND HEALTH EDUCATION FOR A TOTAL OF 4,622 HOURS OF CLASSES, SERVING 2,409 INDIVIDUALS. PROGRAMS TOPICS INCLUDED AN INTRODUCTION TO IPAD FEATURES, TIPS FOR SENIOR DRIVERS, UNDERSTANDING LONG-TERM CARE OPTIONS, HOW TO IDENTIFY AND PROTECT AGAINST SENIOR SCAMS, NEW SMART HOME DEVICES, ONLINE DATING FOR SENIORS, BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERISM AND OTHER SUBJECTS RELEATED TO AGING.2) AWARDED $242,203 IN GRANTS TO 30 NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN SUPPORT OF COMBATTING SOCIAL ISOLATION AMONG JAPANESE AMERICAN AND JAPANESE OLDER ADULTS, AND CAREGIVERS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. CONDUCTED WORKSHOPS FOR ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR KEIRO GRANTS. 3) SUPPORTED RESIDENTS OF THE FOUR SENIOR CARE FACILITIES PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY KEIRO THROUGH CULTURALLY-SENSTIVE PROGRAMMING AND ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING ANNUAL KEIRO NO HI EVENT (RESPECT FOR THE AGED DAY), TRADITIONAL JAPANESE BREAKFASTS, SHOGATSU (NEW YEAR'S CELEBRATION), HINAMATSURI (GIRL'S DAY CELEBRATION) AND OTHER MONTHLY CULTURAL PROGRAMMING.4) PROVIDED INTERNSHIPS FOR TWO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND A RECENT COLLEGE GRADUATE. INTERNS PROVIDED COMMUNITY EDUCATION ON TOPICS SUCH AS MENTAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL ISOLATION. DEVELOPED A PROGRAM TO PROVIDE TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT TO OLDER ADULTS. COORDINATED SPECIAL ACTIVITIES FOR RESIDENTS IN THE SENIOR CARE FACILITIES FORMERLY OWNED BY KEIRO. 5) PROVIDED CASE MANAGEMENT/REFERRAL SERVICES TO 12 COMMUNITY MEMBERS, INCLUDING PLACEMENT IN LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES, LOCATING IN-HOME CARE AGENCIES AND ACCESSING SERVICES.6) IYASHI CARE - PARTNERED WITH PROVIDENCE HEALTH & SERVICES TO PROVIDE CULTURALLY SENSITIVE PALLIATIVE CARE TO OLDER ADULTS WITH SERIOUS ILLNESSES AND/OR DEBILITATING SYMPTOMS, AND SUPPORT FOR THEIR FAMILIES.7) PARTNERED WITH LITTLE TOKYO SERVICE CENTER TO PROVIDE 4,049 HOURS OF SUPPORT FOR A MULTIPURPOSE GATHERING SPACE FOR OLDER ADULTS, EXPANSION OF THE CAREGIVER SUPPORT SERVICES TO CREATE SUPPORT GROUPS FOR 45 CAREGIVERS AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A CLIENT ASSISTANCE FUND FOR OLDER ADULTS WITH LIMITED RESOURCES.8) PARTNERED WITH THE JAPANESE AMERICAN CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY CENTER TO HOST THE SECOND ANNUAL KEIRO NO HI FESTIVAL, AN ESTABLISHED HOLIDAY TO CELEBRATE THE ELDERLY IN JAPAN, WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY OVER 1,100 OLDER ADULTS. THIS FESTIVAL TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF THE OLDER ADULT PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING PROVIDING BUS TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM LITTLE TOKYO, PROVIDING A SPACE FOR OLDER ADULTS TO SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS AND CREATING INTERGENERATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL YOUTH. 9) HOSTED A CAREGIVER CONFERENCE TO PROVIDE CAREGIVING RESOURCES TO OVER 200 INFORMAL CAREGIVERS IN THE PASADENA COMMUNITY. RESOURCES INCLUDED WORKSHOPS ON CAREGIVING TIPS, CAREGIVER STRESS MANAGEMENT AND UTILZIING SMART PHONE APPLICATIONS TO ENHANCE CARE COORDINATION.10) HOSTED THE SECOND ANNUAL KEIRO SYMPOSIUM, WHICH HIGHLIGHTED 15 INDUSTRY LEADERS AND INNOVATORS WHO ARE CHANGING THE AGING PROCESS. LEADERS AND INNOVATORS INCLUDED REPRESENTATIVES FROM ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS TOYOTA, LUMEN, AND ELLIQ. OVER 300 ATTENDEES PARTOOK IN VARIOUS LECTURES AND PANELS WHICH DISCUSSED TOPICS SUCH AS SOCIAL CONNECTIONS, AGING AT HOME AND WHOLE-PERSON CARE.
