Organizations Filed Purposes: SPCALA IS DEDICATED TO THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS THROUGH EDUCATION, LAW ENFORCEMENT, INTERVENTION AND ADVOCACY.

COMPANION ANIMAL SERVICES : DESPITE COVID-19 AND ITS IMPACT ON HUMAN HEALTH, ANIMAL HEALTH, AND THE WORLD ECONOMY, SPCALA CONTINUES TO PROVIDE QUALITY COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR ANIMALS AND THE PUBLIC. FROM MARCH 2020 TO AUGUST 2020, SPCALA PROVIDED SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC MAINLY ONLINE AND BY APPOINTMENT, AS A SAFETY MEASURE TO STOP THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS. ANIMAL SHELTER SERVICES PROVIDE SHELTER, VETERINARY CARE, REHABILITATION, AND SOCIALIZATION FOR HOMELESS AND ABUSED ANIMALS. VETERINARY SERVICESIN FISCAL YEAR 2020, SPCALA VETERINARIANS AND STAFF PERFORMED A TOTAL OF 7,662 EXAMS AND 11,490 VETERINARY PROCEDURES FOR SHELTER PETS, INCLUDING VACCINATIONS, WOUND CARE, MEDICATED BATHS, DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, AND SURGERY, AMONG OTHERS. SPCALA HELD LOW-COST VACCINE CLINICS IN OCTOBER 2019 AND FEBRUARY 2020, HELPING 288 COMMUNITY ANIMALS WHOSE OWNERS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO AFFORD THE SERVICE OTHERWISE.TRAINING & ENRICHMENTENRICHMENT AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES HELP ANIMALS COPE WITH THE INEVITABLE STRESS AND ANXIETY INHERENT IN SHELTER LIFE MOST STRIKINGLY IMPORTANT TO SURVIVORS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY. SIX SUCH ANIMALS GREW FROM YOUNG PUPPIES TO ADOLESCENT DOGS IN THE CARE OF SPCALA IN FISCAL YEAR 2020. IN ADDITION TO ADDRESSING A SLEW OF VETERINARY CONCERNS TREATMENT FOR WHICH INCLUDED MEDICATION AND SURGICAL INTERVENTION THE DOGS SPENT A CRITICAL PERIOD OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT AT THE SHELTER. AS SUCH, THE SPCALA ANIMAL BEHAVIOR & TRAINING DEPARTMENT IMPLEMENTED A VIGOROUS PUPPY SOCIALIZATION AND SPECIALIZED TRAINING PROGRAM FOR THE DOGS. ONCE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION, THE DOGS WERE CAREFULLY MATCHED WITH NEW FAMILIES, BASED ON THE DOGS' UNIQUE NEEDS ALL WERE ADOPTED IN DECEMBER 2019.THE SPCALA ANIMAL BEHAVIOR & TRAINING DEPARTMENT WORKED DIRECTLY WITH 658 DOGS, 12 CATS, MANAGED 62 PROJECT AND PROTECTIVE CUSTODY DOGS, ASSESSED 94 DOGS FOR HUMANE EDUCATION AND SHELTER PROGRAMS, AND CONDUCTED 60 HANDLING ASSESSMENTS. THE DEPARTMENT PROVIDED 241 STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS THE TOOLS THEY NEEDED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET CANINE BODY LANGUAGE, TRAINING METHODS USED AND EXERCISES TAUGHT, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ENRICHMENT IN THE COURSE OF 45 INTERNAL TRAINING CLASSES.ADOPTION, REUNIFICATION, & RETENTIONFINDING AND KEEPING NEW HOMES FOR SHELTER ANIMALS AND RETURNING LOST PETS TO THEIR OWNERS REMAINS PARAMOUNT. SPCALA FOUND ADOPTIVE HOMES FOR 2,026 SHELTER PETS, REUNITED 323 LOST PETS WITH THEIR FAMILIES, PLACED 144 ANIMALS WITH TRUSTED RESCUE PARTNERS, AND PROVIDED FOSTER HOMES FOR 496 ANIMALS IN NEED OF TEMPORARY PLACEMENT. SPCALA HELD ONE ADOPTION IN-PERSON ADOPTION EVENT PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC, AND ADJUSTED THE REMAINING EIGHT EVENTS TO VIRTUAL FORMATS, RESULTING IN 623 SPECIAL-EVENT ADOPTIONS. TRAINING, AGILITY, AND SPECIALTY CLASSES INCREASE THE ABILITY OF ADOPTERS TO EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR PETS AND ENHANCE THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND. TO THAT END, SPCALA ENROLLED 1,355 (NEW AND CONTINUING) STUDENTS IN DOG TRAINING CLASSES. FROM MARCH TO JULY, IN-PERSON DOG TRAINING CLASSES WERE PAUSED, AND IN THEIR PLACE, SPCALA OFFERED ONLINE PRIVATE TRAINING CLASSES AND A SERIES OF FREE WEBINARS FOR DOG OWNERS. SPCALA ANSWERED 948 BEHAVIOR HELPLINE CALLS AND EMAILS FROM THE PUBLIC.

ANIMAL PROTECTION SERVICE PROGRAM: ANIMAL PROTECTION SERVICE PROGRAM (APS) INVESTIGATES ANIMAL CRUELTY CASES THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA, AND ASSISTS IN THE PROSECUTION OF INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS WHO NEGLECT OR ABUSE ANIMALS. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, APS STAFF FIELDED 2,790 CALLS, WHICH RESULTED IN 481 FORMAL COMPLAINTS. IN THE COURSE OF THEIR DUTIES, ANIMAL CRUELTY INVESTIGATORS CHECKED ON THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF OVER 1,661 ANIMALS. MOST COMPLAINTS WERE FOUND TO HAVE NO VIOLATION, OR WERE RESOLVED THROUGH EDUCATION, PREVENTION, OR REFERRAL TO ANOTHER AGENCY. HOWEVER, TWO NEW CRIMINAL CASES WERE FILED, AND FOUR OTHERS CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS FISCAL YEARS. SPCALA HUMANE OFFICERS FREQUENTLY AID OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN THE EXECUTION OF SEARCH WARRANTS, WHEN ANIMALS ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT OR ANIMAL CRUELTY IS SUSPECTED. IN SOME CASES, SPCALA HUMANE OFFICERS WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE ENTRY TEAM AND TASKED WITH THE CONTAINMENT AND CONFINEMENT OF ANY DOGS ON THE PROPERTY TO PROVIDE FOR THE SAFETY BOTH OF THE DOGS AND THE OFFICERS. IN OTHER INSTANCES, SPCALA EXPERTISE IN INVESTIGATING ANIMAL CRUELTY IS REQUESTED. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, SPCALA ASSISTED IN THE EXECUTION OF FIVE SUCH SEARCH WARRANTS. IN DECEMBER 2019, SPCALA HUMANE OFFICERS, IN A JOINT EFFORT WITH ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CARE & CONTROL CONDUCTED INSPECTIONS OF RETAIL PET STORES IN ALHAMBRA, COMPTON, GARDENA, AND LA MIRADA, FOR COMPLIANCE WITH CALIFORNIA STATE LAWS REGARDING PET SHOPS. IN FEBRUARY 2020, SPCALA COMMENCED TRAINING APPROXIMATELY 245 INVESTIGATORS FROM THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION IN TECHNIQUES THAT ADDRESS THE SPECIFIC NEED OF LAW ENFORCEMENT WHEN ENCOUNTERING DOGS IN THE COURSE OF THEIR DUTIES. THE COURSE, DOG BEHAVIOR FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT, IS CERTIFIED BY THE COMMISSION ON PEACE OFFICER STANDARDS AND TRAINING (POST) AND AVAILABLE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA.IN ADDITION TO OFFERING COURSE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT, SPCALA HUMANE OFFICERS REACH THE COMMUNITY IN A VARIETY OF WAYS TO INCREASE THE AWARENESS OF THE SCOPE OF HUMANE LAW ENFORCEMENT. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, OFFICERS PRESENTED TO YOUTH IN SPCALA'S TEACHING LOVE AND COMPASSION (TLC) PROGRAM, PARTICIPATED IN THE SUBARU LOVES PETS ADOPTION FESTIVAL, AND SHOT A VIDEO THANKING THE STAND UP FOR PITS FOUNDATION FOR THEIR "ANGEL GRANT" IN THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH SERVICES: SPCALA HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAMS, WHETHER DELIVERED IN-PERSON OR VIRTUALLY, AIM TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITIES AS ONE WAY TO PREVENT ANIMAL CRUELTY AND INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE. WE DO THIS BY: - ENGAGING YOUTH AND CHILDREN IN EMPATHY-BASED ANIMAL WELFARE EDUCATION AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING; - ENCOURAGING YOUTH ADVOCACY FOR ANIMALS, OTHERS, AND THEMSELVES; - OFFERING VIOLENCE INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR ADULTS AND FAMILIES.IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, SPCALA CONTINUED TO EXTEND CONCEPTS OF EMPATHY AND COMPASSION TO YOUTH, CHILDREN, AND ADULTS THROUGH A RANGE OF PROGRAMS AND SERVICES, INCLUDING: TEACHING LOVE & COMPASSION (TLC); COURT DIVERSION PROGRAM FOR YOUTH; ANIMAL SAFETY NET; ELECTIVE PROGRAM; PET CARE WORKSHOPS; FRIENDS FOR LIFE SUMMER CAMP; CUSTOM PRESENTATIONS BY REQUEST; AND CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ONLINE. PROGRAMMING WENT LARGELY VIRTUAL DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, BEGINNING IN MARCH 2020.TLC & THE SPCALA COURT DIVERSION PROGRAM FOR YOUTHTLC IS A PROGRAM FOR UNDERSERVED YOUTH THAT OFFERS A SMALL-GROUP FORMAT THAT COMBINES SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING WITH ANIMAL WELFARE LESSONS AND HANDS-ON POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TRAINING WITH SHELTER DOGS. SPCALA DEVELOPED TLC TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, AND HAS SUCH SIGNIFICANT SUCCESS WITH IT WE NOW ALSO OFFER THE SPCALA COURT DIVERSION PROGRAM FOR YOUTH. THE DIVERSION PROGRAM IS AN ANIMAL-ASSISTED INTERVENTION PROGRAM MODELED AFTER TLC BUT SPECIFICALLY MADE FOR JUSTICE SYSTEM-INVOLVED YOUTH REFERRED BY THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE AND OTHER JUVENILE JUSTICE PROFESSIONALS. PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC, SPCALA RAN FIVE TLC SESSIONS, REACHING 47 TLC STUDENTS, AS WELL AS FOUR SESSIONS OF THE COURT DIVERSION PROGRAM, REACHING 15 STUDENTS. SPCALA DEVELOPED VIRTUAL TLC PROGRAMMING, TO BE OFFERED TO YOUTH IN THE FALL, AND CREATED PROTOCOLS TO OFFER THE DIVERSION PROGRAM IN-PERSON.HUMANE EDUCATION ELECTIVE THE SPCALA HUMANE EDUCATION ELECTIVE PROGRAM (EP) INCREASES EMPATHY AND PREVENTS VIOLENCE. CURRENTLY OFFERED TO STUDENTS IN THE COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (CUSD), THE SPCALA PROGRAM WORKS TO BRING HUMANE EDUCATION PRINCIPLES TO THE CLASSROOM. STUDENTS 'ELECT' TO TAKE THE CLASS, JUST AS THEY WOULD ANY OTHER ELECTIVE, LIKE ART OR MUSIC. IN CLASS, STUDENTS WORK DILIGENTLY, EXPLORING SERIOUS AND VITAL TOPICS SUCH AS RELATIONSHIP BUILDING, DIVERSITY, VIOLENCE PREVENTION, AND RESPONSIBILITY. THEIR WORK IS GUIDED BY COMPREHENSIVE CLASSROOM CURRICULUM AND, AS IS THE SPCALA WAY, WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM SHELTER DOGS. THIS ELECTIVE MEETS THE CRITERIA FOR CALIFORNIA EDUCATION CODE 233.5 AND SUPPORTS ANTI BULLYING INITIATIVES. LAST YEAR, SPCALA OFFERED THE EP TO TWO 7TH-GRADE CLASSES IN THE FALL 2019 SEMESTER, TOTALING 67 EP STUDENTS FOR THE YEAR.ANIMAL SAFETY NET (ASN)SPCALA'S ASN YOUTH & FAMILIES PROGRAM AIMS TO ASSIST THOSE CURRENTLY AFFECTED BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. THIS PROGRAM OFFERS ANIMAL-ASSISTED HUMANE EDUCATION WORKSHOPS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGENCIES. OUR FORMAT IS FLEXIBLE, DEPENDING ON THE AGENCY AND THEIR NEEDS. THIS PROGRAM CAN RUN SINGLE OR MULTI-DAY WORKSHOPS IN SMALL GROUPS, AND CAN ALSO BE OFFERED VIRTUALLY. SPCALA RAN FOUR SEPARATE GROUPS (2 FAMILIES, 2 YOUTH) IN OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, FEBRUARY AND JULY/AUGUST, REACHING 32 PARTICIPANTS RANGING IN AGE FROM 5-YEARS-OLD TO ADULT.DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS WILL OFTEN NOT LEAVE A SITUATION OF ABUSE IF IT MEANS THEY MUST LEAVE THEIR PETS BEHIND. ABUSERS OFTEN THREATEN, HARM, OR KILL PETS TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. SINCE 1998, THE SPCALA ANIMAL SAFETY NET (ASN): PET HOUSING PROGRAM HAS WORKED TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE BY PROVIDING SAFE, TEMPORARY HOUSING FOR THE PETS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS. SPCALA HOUSED 61 ASN PETS 37 DOGS, 23 CATS, AND ONE OTHER FROM 32 FAMILIES, WHICH INCLUDED 43 CHILDREN, IN FISCAL YEAR 2020. THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY FOR ASN PETS WAS 33 DAYS. ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMINGSPCALA CREATED A BEVY OF PROGRAMMING FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES - ALL DELIVERED VIRTUALLY INCLUDING AN ONLINE FRIENDS FOR LIFE CAMP, WOOF & WIFI (IN WHICH KIDS LEARN TO TRAIN THEIR OWN PET DOGS), WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS, AND MORE. OTHER PROGRAMMING REACHED 2,888 STUDENTS IN FISCAL YEAR 2020.
