MLK HEALTH AND WELLNESS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (MLK-CDC) IS CHARGED (CON SCH O) WITH FACILITATING THE REDEVELOPMENT OF THE MLK MEDICAL CAMPUS IN SOUTH LOS ANGELES THAT INCLUDES THE REUSE AND REPURPOSING OF UNDERUTILIZED BUILDINGS FOR EXPANSION OF DESPERATELY NEEDED HEALTH CARE, MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, AND HEALTH-RELATED EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES FOR UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS, INCLUDING THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE. IN 2020, THE MLK OPC/CDU COVID-19 TESTING SITE ADMINISTERED OVER 70,000 TESTS - THE SITE WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST AND ITS EXTENSIVE OUTREACH HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT IN THE INCREASED TESTING OF VULNERABLE POPULATIONS.

MLK-CDC WORKING WITH THE MLK OUTPATIENT CENTER ("MLK OPC") FACILITATED GRANTS OF OVER $190,000 IN 2020 FOR MUCH NEEDED COMMUNITY OUTREACH FOR COVID-19 TESTING AND EDUCATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHARLES DREW UNIVERSITY ("CDU"). OVER 1,000 PERSONS WERE TESTED DAILY. THE MLK OUTPATIENT CENTER (MLK-OPC) OFFERS A RANGE OF SERVICES, FROM PEDIATRIC AND OBSTETRIC CARE TO ORTHOPEDICS, NEUROLOGY AND URGENT CARE. IT PROVIDES SERVICES FOR CHEMOTHERAPY PATIENTS, A STROKE REHAB SUITE, AND AN ORAL SURGERY CENTER. LOCATED ON THE MLK MEDICAL CAMPUS, THE MLK-OPC GATHERS HEALTH DATA, CONDUCTS PATIENT SURVEYS AND PROVIDES SPECIALTY CARE TO VULNERABLE POPULATIONS.

MLK-CDC'S PROGRAM IS FOCUSED ON THE EXPANSION AND ENHANCEMENT OF THE MLK PEDIATRIC CLINIC (SERVES 4,000 CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE IN SOUTH LOS ANGELES). THE FOSTER CARE CLINIC HAS BEEN HOUSED FOR MORE THAN 35 YEARS IN DILAPIDATED CONSTRUCTION TRAILERS (12,000 SQ. FT.). IN OCTOBER 2021, THE CLINIC WILL RELOCATE TO THE NEW MLK CHILD AND FAMILY WELLBEING CENTER. THE NEW THREE-STORY MODULAR BUILDING (50,000 SQ. FT.) AND ADJACENT CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND WILL ALLOW FOR INCREASED AND ENHANCED HEALTH SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS INCLUDING AN EXPANDED CHILDREN'S FOSTER CARE CLINIC, AUTISM CENTER, AS WELL AS A FAMILY JUSTICE RESOURCE CENTER.

MLK-CDC WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE CHARLES R. DREW UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND SCIENCE ("CDU") LOCATED ON THE MLK MEDICAL CAMPUS TO EXPAND ITS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM AND IMPROVE ITS ADMINISTRATIVE AND TEACHING FACILITIES. THE MLK-CDC IS PROVIDING GUIDANCE ON REDEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL INCLUDE BIO-MED LABS, UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AND FACULTY HOUSING. IT INTRODUCED CDU TO POTENTIAL FUNDING SOURCES AND FACILITATED PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN CDU AND EXISTING HEALTH CARE ENTITIES INCLUDING THE MLK PEDIATRIC CLINIC. AS SUCH, CDU WAS AWARDED A $200,000 FOUNDATION GRANT IN 2018 USED FOR UPDATING THE UNIVERSITY'S INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN FOR ITS 11-ACRE MEDICAL CAMPUS. MLK-CDC HELPED FACILITATE A GROUND LEASE FROM LA COUNTY FOR A MUCH NEEDED 120TH STREET GRAND ENTRANCE TO THE UNIVERSITY. CONSTRUCTION HAS BEEN (CON SCH O) COMPLETED AND A GRAND OPENING WAS HELD IN DECEMBER 2020. THIS SITE WAS USED IN 2020 FOR A COVID-19 TESTING SITE ADMINISTERING OVER 70,000 TESTS. FUTURE PLANS INCLUDE EXPANSION ON THE NEWLY ACQUIRED GROUND LEASE FROM THE COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR STUDENT HOUSING, NEW CLASSROOM, AN ATHLETIC FIELD AND BIO-SCIENCE FACILITIES.
