Organizations Filed Purposes:
To provide a supportive, nurturing learning environment for at-risk women and families. This is accomplished by offering educational programs that empower women and their families to reach their full potential, build self-esteem, and strengthen familial and community relationships.
Please note that due to COVID-19, our outcomes differ from previous years. The Early Childhood Program provided 99 children ages 0-5 (80 preschoolers, 19 infants and toddlers) with 469 ECE hours (on site) (or a total of over 46,000 ECE hours) as well as an average of 4 hours a week of distance learning while mandatory closure occurred, of developmentally appropriate curriculum to prepare them for kindergarten. Results of pre- and post-program assessments (DRDP) of children ages 3-5 showed significant developmental gains, as measured by their advancement to the top three (out of 9) developmental levels in each domain (pre-post): self regulation (13%-85%), social-emotional (3%-87%), language (3%-89%), literacy (6%-82%) math (22%-85%), and physical (13%-93%). These children, who are all English language learners, showed major gains in English language development, with the percentage in the top two (out of 6) levels of this domain rising from 7% to 69%. These gains are critical for children being prepared for success in kindergarten.
Please note that due to COVID-19, our outcomes differ from previous years. The Parent Education program delivered 122 hours of on-site programming focused on strengthening the self-reliance and self- confidence of 30 women (or approximately 3,660 hours of parenting) as well as an average of 4 hours a week of off-site distance learning during mandatory closure, by providing classes in topics such as child development, school choices, healthy eating and leadership skills. This program includes 71 hours PCILA (Parent Child Interactive Literacy Activities) which unites the children from the ECE program with their parents to learn strategies for developing family literacy skills as well as promote learning in the home. Thirty (30) mothers mothers participated in our parenting and PCILA classes. Pre- and post-program surveys revealed improvements in mothers' support of their child's learning and development, including pre-post) frequently singing songs or playing music with children (37%-53%), asking children what is in a picture which reading (53%-74%), talking with children about letters of the alphabet (37%-63%), following a regular routing for reading books life before bedtime (26%-53%), and talking with their child's teacher about what they are learning (42%- 53%. Overall outcomes for mothers were not as strong as in past years, which was likely due to the post-survey being conducted in May when families were (and still are) managing the direct impact of the pandemic on their lives.
Please note that due to COVID-19, our outcomes differ from previous years. The English as Second Language program (ESL) provided 33 women with 291 hours of on-site ESL programming (or a total of 9,603 hours of ESL with an average of 4 hours a week of distance learning during mandatory closure hours. Pre- and post-test scores showed that 59% of mothers reached their goal for English language and literacy. The percentage who reached their goal was lower than usual as it reflects their most recent tests in February; we usually conduct the final post- test in May after an additional three months of instruction, but were not able to because of the pandemic. Teachers observed improvements in pronunciation; comprehension; the development of writing and critical thinking skills; and confidence when speaking English. One hundred percent (100%) of graduating third-year students reported feeling confident in their ability to use English to find work--up from 67% when they began the program.
