The Southern California Library documents, provides access to, and offers education about histories of people working in community to create change.
We assisted authors, artists, scholars, and other researchers in accessing the archives with a goal of increasing awareness and understanding of local community histories. Activities included acquiring new collections documenting local histories, assisting with research requests, and providing archival materials for exhibits on local histories and community issues as well as participating in related workshops and events, including an exhibit/events at a world-renowned museum that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.
We worked directly with schools, educators, and students, as well as staff of local community-based organizations and community residents, to access, use, and analyze our archives with a goal of increasing their ability to learn from and understand local community histories. Activities included conducting class presentations and educational workshops aimed at increasing capacity for civic participation on issues impacting the local community; training students to conduct archival research; making archival materials/lesson plans available online; and providing additional primary source documents to students, reaching an estimated 2,000-3,000.
We conducted programming and offered services/resources for local youth and other residents with a goal of strengthening our local community. Activities included providing a safe and welcoming public space for community meetings, events, and conferences; as well as access to and assistance with basic information technology, and food/clothing/hygiene resources, reaching an estimated 10K visitors, many of them low-income Black and Latinx residents from the Library's South Los Angeles neighborhood.
