Music as a catalyst for human connection.
The Messiah Project: Since 2015, Street Symphony (SS) has partnered with The Midnight Mission (TMM) to host its annual "Messiah Project," a celebration of the resilience and stories of the Skid Row community. In Skid Row, music and art is not an entertainment commodity, but a vital lifeline to community, recovery, and humanity. The Messiah Project presents excerpts of Handel's beloved Messiah while als featuring stories, music, and performances from members of the Skid Row community. Community members often serve as soloists, choristers, and participants alongside Street Symphony's roster of professional, world-class artists. Performed at The Midnight Mission, the Project also features a series of 12-15 free workshop events for the Skid Row community and the creation of several hundred hygiene kits and amenity bags for the Skid Row community. During 2020 we utilized a new TWYN online series in replacement of our public event Messiah
Daniel Chaney Fellows Program: This program pairs world-class artists from Street Symphony's professional roster of vocalists, instrumentalists, and composers with artists and musicians living in the Skid Row community who have been impacted by homelessness. After an application process, Fellows receive two years of free musical instruction and are featured as soloists or lead artists in several of Street Symphony programs, including the year end Messiah Project. The Daniel Chaney Fellows Program continues through COVID. All fellows have received tablets and mobile hotspots and continue to receive weekly instruction from teaching artists virtually. Showcase events have moved from in person events to virtual events featured on the Street Symphony social media platforms.
Music for Change: Music For Change is a weekly process group with Weingart Association Reentry Program Supervisors and Street Symphony music facilitators, for clients currently on parole from long term or life sentences from California prisons. Street Symphony Staff share meditative musical offerings to convene vulnerable spaces of community and conversation with a regular cohort of clients. Weingart supervisors facilitate conversations regarding reentry and recovery. Quarterly performance events showcase the collaborations between Street Symphony staff and Weingart Center participants. During Covid, MFC has continued in person on a weekly basis, with approval from Weingart supervisors. When unsafe, Street Symphony staff continue to connect with clients through virtual programming. Clients receive tech support from Street Symphony staff to ensure accessibility to virtual programming.
