Organizations Filed Purposes: TO ENRICH THE LIVES OF SENIOR CITIZENS IN THE COMMUNITY OF LOYALTON, CA.

Nutrition Program - The Nutrition Programs serves senior members of Sierra County a nutritious meal five days a week. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, meals quit being served at the Loyalton Senior Center, and services were moved to all meals being delivered. During this time, a breakfast service was also added to aid seniors in their ability to remain in their own residence. Costs, and the number of meals served rose accordingly. Staff were added to prepare the meal, and volunteers helped deliver. A nominal fee is requested for each meal.

Transportation Program - Sierra County is one of the most frontier counties in California. As such, access to services is an on-going challenge for residents. For those without their own transportation, or minimally reliable transportation, it can be a barrier to continued residency in this area. The Transportation Program offers rides to residents to grocery shop, buy sundries, make it to doctors appointments, purchase prescriptions, and before Covid-19, attend social functions. Since restrictions have been in place, trips are limited to necessities. A fee for service is collected, but represents a small portion of the actual cost of operating this program. A new bus, purchased through the Sierra County Transportation Commission, was delivered this year.

Outreach Program - Serving lunches to seniors often elicits questions and concerns both from the clients, and about the clients. The Outreach Program offers the opportunity to address these concerns. From health issues, to landlord disputes, staff advocate for the needs of the seniors in Sierra County. Since Covid-19, staff and volunteers call and check on people, and sometimes just call to say hi and encourage them to keep up their spirits. This program also lends household medical equipment to local residents (i.e., walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs, etc.)
