FAMILY PREPAREDNESS FOR EARTHQUAKES IN HAITI AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC:MANY FAMILIES IN HAITI AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC LIVE IN AREAS WHERE A DAMAGING EARTHQUAKE, AND THE LANDSLIDES IT COULD TRIGGER, WILL OCCUR SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING. A POWERFUL OFFSHORE EARTHQUAKE NEAR THE NORTH COAST COULD ALSO QUICKLY GENERATE A LETHAL TSUNAMI.OUR PROGRAM IS EXPLAINING HOW AN EARTHQUAKE WILL AFFECT COMMUNITIES, AND HOW PEOPLE CAN BETTER PROTECT THEIR FAMILIES FROM HARM. WITH INPUT FROM LOCAL SAFETY COMMITTEES THAT GHI INITIATED, OUR IN-COUNTRY STAFF WILL DEVELOP NEW PUBLIC MESSAGES. PREPAREDNESS STORIES AND GRAPHICS MAY CIRCULATE VIA RADIO SPOTS, SOCIAL MEDIA, T-SHIRTS, CONTESTS AND STREET PLAYS, OR EVEN FROM SOUND TRUCKS DURING FESTIVALS. EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS ACTIVITIES WILL BE INTRODUCED IN SCHOOLS, CHURCHES AND IN DOOR-TO-DOOR CAMPAIGNS.COMMUNITIES WILL AT LAST HAVE ACTIONABLE EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO WHERE THEY LIVE AND IN PLAIN LANGUAGE. WORKING WITH OUR TECHNICAL PARTNER, THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, WE WILL COMBINE BEST-AVAILABLE SCIENCE AND PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION IN SOURCEBOOKS WRITTEN IN KREYOL, FRENCH, SPANISH, AND ENGLISH, WHICH EVERYONE WORKING TO IMPROVE SAFETY CAN USE.

RESILIENT SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, AND BUILDINGS ARE CRITICAL TO HOW A COMMUNITY FARES IN A DISASTER:EVERY YEAR, NATURAL DISASTERS DISRUPT CHILDREN'S EDUCATION IN POOR COUNTRIES. THE DIRECT DAMAGE INJURES STUDENTS AND DESTROYS POORLY CONSTRUCTED SCHOOL BUILDINGS. IN THE AFTERMATH, TEACHING AND LEARNING SUFFER. CHILDREN WHO LOSE THEIR SCHOOL MAY NOT BE ABLE TO FINISH THEIR STUDIES. WE WORK WITH YOUTH, EDUCATORS, AND BUILDERS TO MAKE SCHOOLS SAFER FROM DISASTERS. THROUGH OUR TIMOUN AN AKSYON ACTIVITIES, HAITIAN YOUTH ARE GAINING KNOWLEDGE TO UNDERSTAND THEIR OPTIONS AND BUILDING EXPERIENCE TO TAKE EFFECTIVE ACTION. THE PROJECT FOCUSES ON TWO DENSELY POPULATED DISTRICTS: DOWNTOWN CAP-HATIEN WHERE HISTORIC BUILDINGS LINE NARROW STREETS, AND LA PETITE ANSE WHERE PEOPLE LIVE VERY CLOSE TO THE SEA AND QUITE FAR FROM HIGH GROUND. IN NEPAL, THE MANY SCHOOLS MADE OF UNREINFORCED STONE MASONRY, OR OTHER BRITTLE MATERIAL, ARE LIKELY TO COLLAPSE IN A BIG EARTHQUAKE. UNTIL THESE BUILDINGS ARE UPGRADED, CHILDREN NEED PROTECTION FROM HEAVY DEBRIS THAT WILL FALL DURING SHAKING. FOR CONDITIONS LIKE THIS, WE PREVIOUSLY INTRODUCED THE AWARD-WINNING EARTHQUAKE DESK TO BHUTAN'S MINISTRY OF EDUCATION. DIFFERENT FROM A STANDARD SCHOOL DESK, THE EARTHQUAKE DESK CAN WITHSTAND HEAVY LOADS AND SHELTER TWO CHILDREN. WE ARE NOW ASSESSING THE FEASIBILITY OF THIS CONCEPT FOR NEPAL SCHOOLS.IN RURAL AREAS A SINGLE HOSPITAL OR CLINIC MAY BE THE ONLY PLACE TO GO FOR MEDICAL CARE. BUT AT A TIME WHEN PEOPLE NEED THEM MOST, DISASTERS CAN CRIPPLE THESE FACILITIES. TO CARE FOR A SURGE OF INJURED PATIENTS, AND TO KEEP FUNCTIONING THROUGH CHALLENGING CONDITIONS, HOSPITALS MUST PREPARE TO GO IT ALONE. WE HELP MEDICAL STAFF IDENTIFY THEIR CRISIS ROLES, PLAN HOW TO EVACUATE, PRACTICE DISASTER RESPONSE IN REALISTIC SIMULATIONS, AND AVOID LOSSES. WE ALSO HELP PLAN FOR BACKUP WATER, POWER, COMMUNICATIONS, AND CRITICAL SUPPLIES.

ASSESSMENT AND SCENARIOS:PEOPLE HAVE A HARD TIME VISUALIZING HOW A MAJOR THREAT COULD BECOME A DISASTER THAT WILL AFFECT THEM AND THEIR FAMILY, IN SPECIFIC WAYS, FOR MONTHS AND YEARS. WE DEVELOP DISASTER SCENARIOS THAT PERSONALIZE THE IMPACTS. WE ASSESS THE SPECIFIC VULNERABILITIES OF LOCAL BUILDINGS AND INFRASTRUCTURE. OUR PROCESS ENGAGES DIVERSE VOICES ALONG WITH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS. THE RESULTS MAKE COMPLEX PROBLEMS APPROACHABLE AND PROVIDE A COMPELLING BASIS FOR LOCAL DECISIONS ABOUT GROWTH, POLICY, AND ACTION.
