Organizations Filed Purposes: SHE-CAN stands for Supporting Her Education Changes A Nation and our mission is to equip and empower young, low-income women from post-conflict countries to become leaders who change their nations and the world. SHE-CAN believes women's global leadership is a solution to many of the insurmountable issues overwhelming our planet: climate change, clean water, war, etc. These issues disproportionately impact women in the developing world and yet, most leaders addressing these issues are men. To solve these problems, women need to sit at all local, domestic and international decision-making tables. We address this need by giving potential leaders the opportunity to gain the world-class tertiary education, leadership training, and mentorship needed to break from oppressive systems. Scholars are prepared to return to their communities as impactful leaders ready to launch careers that allow them to take their seats at leadership tables and promote more just, peaceful, and inclusive practices.

SHE-CAN is dedicated to equipping and empowering low-income young women from countries restoring peace with the education, leadership skills, and network connections needed to become leaders who change their nations and the world.

Since 2011 SHE-CAN has selected 2-9 Rwandan scholars each year. In 2014 we expanded into Cambodia and have accepted 4-6 scholars each year ever since. We began recruiting the first class of candidates in Liberia in 2018. To date, 56 scholars have won a total of $15M in scholarships. They attend a total of 25 schools including Dartmouth, Northwestern and Wellesley. Additionally, ten new candidates from Cambodia and Liberia have been selected and are applying for 2020 admittance. SHE-CAN's 17 graduates are thriving in impressive careers and several are already leaders including the Personal Assistant to Rwanda's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Secretary to Rwanda's Minister of the Interior, and a Director of Health and Impact, a Kigali social impact organization. Each scholar in the program is matched with a team of 5-6 mentors who help her navigate the school and scholarship application process, support her while she is in school, and provide valuable networking resources to help her establish her career. SHE-CAN now has a community of 280 mentors. Along with mentor support, SHE-CAN provides in-country SAT test preparation and funds non-scholarship costs that each scholar's family cannot afford such as plane tickets, computers, books, health insurance, phones, dormitory supplies and winter wardrobes. SHE-CAN also saw an opportunity to engage US schools as partners and in 2015 formed the SHE-CAN Scholarship Coalition, comprised of a group of 13 partner schools who have each committed to award full scholarships to SHE-CAN candidates. Given their success, SHE-CAN plans to scale into three new markets, starting with Liberia in 2018 and Guatemala in 2020.
