Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE SUN VALLEY WRITERS' CONFERENCE IS TO BRING TOGETHER READERS AND WRITERS TO CELEBRATE IDEAS AT AN ANNUAL EVENT ANCHORED BY RECOGNIZED WRITERS OF FICTION AND NONFICTION.

LITERARY AND PUBLIC EDUCATION

PRESENTATION OF WRITERS' CONFERENCES TO THE PUBLIC HAS EXPOSED PEOPLE TO ESTABLISHED WRITERS, PROVIDED ASSISTANCE TO POTENTIAL WRITERS AND HAS EXPANDED APPRECIATION FOR THE LITERARY WORLD.

FELLOWS PROGRAM: OUR FELLOWS PROGRAM INCLUDES TWO FELLOWS FROM BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY'S CREATIVE WRITING MFA DEPARTMENT. THEY JOIN TWO FELLOWS FROM THE IOWA WRITERS' WORKSHOP - ASPIRING WRITERS, EARLY IN THEIR CAREERS, WHO HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED BY THE FACULTY OF THEIR INSTITUTIONS. THEY ARE TREATED AT CONFERENCE AS PRESENTERS GIVING THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT AND LEARN FROM MORE ESTABLISHED WRITERS.FULFILLMENT FUND SCHOLARSHIPS: IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE FULFILLMENT FUND, A LOS ANGELES NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO RAISING THE PERFORMANCE AND POTENTIAL OF YOUNG PEOPLE, SVWC OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS EACH YEAR TO SIX REMARKABLE YOUNG ADULTS, WHO HAVE BEEN CHOSEN THROUGH A COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS. COSTS FOR TRAVEL, LODGING, AND MEALS ARE INCLUDED.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:SVWC HAS A WALK-IN OFFICE IN KETCHUM WHERE PEOPLE CAN DROP BY TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT SVWC.LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS: THE BARBARA AND JIM CIMINO SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS A FULL CONFERENCE PASS EACH YEAR TO THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY. IN ADDITION, A FULL PASS IS AWARDED TO A LOCAL TEACHER THROUGH THE GARY HUNT SCHOLARSHIP.EYE ON THE FUTURE PROJECT: LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO A LUNCHEON WITH A SVWC PRESENTER DURING THE CONFERENCE. THEY CAN ALSO ATTEND THAT PRESENTER'S TALKS FOR FREE. WE DONATE BOOKS BY THE AUTHOR TO ALL LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS, AND THE TEACHERS ASSIGN IT FOR SPRING/SUMMER READING AND DISCUSSION.WE OFFER THREE SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS EACH YEAR, WHO ARE NOMINATED BY THEIR TEACHERS. THEY ARE INCLUDED IN ALL THE SCHOLAR ACTIVITIES AND MEALS, LED BY A SVWC SCHOLAR LIAISON. WE BROUGHT THE CUBAN-AMERICAN YA AUTHOR PABLO CARTAYA TO SUN VALLEY IN OCTOBER 2019 TO SPEAK TO STUDENTS AT FREE EVENTS AT THE WOOD RIVER MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY. LIBRARY TALK/BOOKS: FOR THE FOURTH YEAR SVWC PARTNERED WITH THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY TO OFFER A FREE LECTURE AND BOOK SIGNING BY A SVWC PRESENTER THE NIGHT BEFORE CONFERENCE BEGAN. BARRY LOPEZ WAS OUR 2019 SPEAKER AND AS IT IS EACH YEAR, THE LECTURE HALL WAS FILLED TO CAPACITY (200 PEOPLE) WITH ADDITIONAL OVERFLOW. IN ADDITION, WE DONATE BOOKS BY THE SVWC PRESENTERS TO THE THREE LOCAL LIBRARIES EACH YEAR.LAWN TALKS: FOUR FREE PAVILION TALKS ARE OPENED TO THE PUBLIC EACH YEAR VIA A LIVE FEED. WE ADVERTISE IN THE LOCAL PAPER AND ON OUR WEBSITE AND VIA EMAIL BLASTS TO LOCALS AND PUT UP FLYERS AROUND TOWN. OUR ATTENDANCE NUMBERS IN 2019 WERE APPROXIMATELY 200-250 EACH DAY. SINGLE EVENT TICKETS: WE MADE INDIVIDUAL TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR SIX PAVILION TALKS IN 2019. WE CONTINUE TO OFFER THEM TO MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY FIRST BY WAY OF AN AD IN THE LOCAL PAPER WHEN THEY GO ON SALE AND AN EMAIL BLAST TO PEOPLE IN OUR DATABASE WITH LOCAL ZIP CODES. STUDENTS/TEACHERS/LIBRARIANS FREE TALKS: FREE ATTENDANCE AT THE 12 PAVILION TALKS IN 2019 CONTINUED TO RISE FOR LOCAL STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS. WE DISTRIBUTED A FLYER TO SCHOOLS WITH THE SPECIFIC PAVILION TALKS SCHEDULE AND INFO ABOUT THE FREE ACCESS THAT HAS HELPED INCREASE AWARENESS.BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS: BSU RUNS THE CONFERENCE ON-SITE BOOKSTORE. EVERY YEAR, 100% OF THE PROCEEDS FROM BOOK SALES DURING SVWC ARE DONATED BACK TO BSU'S READERS AND WRITERS SCHOLARSHIP. THE AMOUNT DONATED FOR 2019 WAS $16,472.45, BRINGING THE TOTAL SINCE THE INITIATIVE BEGAN IN 2016 TO MORE THAN $67,000.
