Organizations Filed Purposes:
Our goal is to teach, preserve, perform, and promote the rich traditional fiddle music and dance of Scotland. We provide personal growth opportunities to those wishing to explore Scottish fiddle and related genres in a supportive environment.
Educate the general public in Scottish traditional music and dance, and other art forms. Activities include two annual week-long music schools, periodic workshops, dissemination of educational materials, public performances, sponsorship of community-based performance groups.
Instruction in Scottish music and dance: One (1) weeklong, on-line (Zoom) educational program providing a week of intensive study in Scottish and related fiddle styles, dance, instrumental accompaniment and singing. Participants include people of all ages and levels of skill. Alasdair Frasers Sierra Fiddle Camp, Heart of Sierra (HOS): June 20-27, 2020 - 425 households, with 1-8 participants per household, including 35 faculty and volunteer staff. Alasdair Frasers Community Workshop and Gathering in Nevada City (Jan 3-5, 2020). Two-day LIVE event including day-long workshop for players of all acoustic instruments, followed by an evening gathering with individual performances and participants playing for dancing. Brunch and jam session next morning. Attendance: workshop 130; evening activities, 230, Brunch/Jam session, 80.
Public performance of Scottish music and dance and sponsorship of community based performance groups: Heart of Sierra (HOS) Online Finale Extravaganza, June 27, 2020. On-line video stream of live and pre-recorded concert by instructors and participants of Heart of Sierra program, open to the general public. Viewing households, approx. 400. SFSF community-based performances - 4 LIVE performances, all benefits/community outreach, 6-13 performers at each, 2-100 audience, with 127 estimated total attendance. 1-virtual mixed concert aired on-line 7/2, 30 performers.
Dissemination of educational materials: Both Alasdair Frasers Sierra Camp and the Community Gathering provided sound files and sheet-music to attendees.SFLA: 50 members receive sheet music and access to sound files of tunes. SFLA conducted on-line music jams weekly after the years planned events were cancelled.SFSF: monthly newsletters to 237 members; 4 LIVE monthly meetings (attendance 18-105); 7 on-line meetings (Zoom) attendance 15-37; 3 bound copies of 900 collected traditional and contemporary tunes provided to members (at cost); recordings and sheet music for performances provided to membership (free download). In addition, SFSF held 1 musical retreats before the year cancelled: Winter Weekend (105). SFSF built a new website during the year, and all local programs along with SFC itself maintain websites to share information with membership and the public.
