Sierra Roots is a community of individuals-some are chronically without homes, some feed others, some provide financial assistance, and some advocate for those in need. Sierra Roots takes a grassroots, relationship-based approach that acknowledges the dignity of the person and nurtures the connections within the community to lessen isolation and promote well-being. Sierra Roots is dedicated to listening to and collaborating with the chronically homeless in helping them to define and meet their needs.
Sierra Roots is committed to providing a secure and safe place for people who are chronically homeless. We employ a relationship-based approach that identifies individual needs and preserves the dignity of each person.
Provide shelter to our homeless in Western Nevada County: In 2020, the County received CARES funding which was used in a unique motel program. In November, Sierra Roots began the management of a 60-day program initiated by the County to put 42 homeless people in motel rooms. Sierra Roots boosted its Emergency Motel Room program for timely responses to burgeoning motel requests due to COVID. We received unprecedented referrals from law enforcement officers, Nevada County HOME Team, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, etc. The need for the program outweighed the resources, so we prioritized for specific vulnerability categories: pregnant women and those with children, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and individuals with dangerous health risks, injury, or physical pain, especially if their condition may be worsened by being out-of-doors. We consider this to be an emergency response and life-saving program that is an essential part of the County's continuum of care.
Provide food, clothing and supplies to our homeless in Western Nevada County: In 2020 the pandemic created new challenges, but Sierra Roots managed to provide life-sustaining weekly meals in a COVID-19 safe environment for homeless and volunteer participants. The meals also provided a place to dive away clothes, shoes, and essential items to participants on a monthly basis. Our weekly Hot Nutritious Meals consists of a vegetarian and meat entree, vegetables, salad and dessert. Together with our weekly Pizza Meals-which included nutritious protein bars and drinks as well as pizza-Sierra Roots served an average of about 50 weekly meals. These programs also allowed us to cultivate relationships with homeless participants in order to engage them in our advocacy program and connect them to needed public services. Most participants of this program are chronically homeless, often living in the woods in tents or under the bridges. We estimate this local homeless population at 70 people.
Manage cold weather shelter operations for Nevada County in Nevada City: Open the nights of January 15-17 and 28-29, February 2-3, and March 15-18. Served approximately 100 unique individuals. The Sierra Roots Weather Shelter is a program in partnership with Nevada County. The Weather Shelter uses a 30-bed public facility in Nevada City as a temporary shelter venue during extreme weather events. In 2020, Sierra Roots used the facility in both pre-COVID and COVID conditions. The COVID sheltering was accomplished by maintaining social distancing in congregate revenue situations, combined with using motel rooms to provide separation.
