The mission of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, established in 1969, is to assist talented writers, with diverse cultural perspectives, to achieve their goals in the genres they pursue. Through the interplay of talented participants, professionals, established writers in a community atmosphere, fiction writers are assisted in their arduous journey from writer to author, poets to achieve a resonant framework for their collected works, and screenwriters to see their work realized in film. In addition, SVCW serves the West - California, Nevada, and the Tahoe-Truckee region area in particular - as an active literary and media arts center, providing access to readings, talks and films by the nation's most prominent writers.
The Squaw Valley Community of Writers Workshops in Fiction,Nonfiction and Memoir is entering its 51st year of workshops, panel discussions, lectures and seminars on the art and craft of fiction writing. The program runs for 7 days with regular workshops in which participants' manuscripts are critiqued by the other participants and staff writers, agents and editors. The events also include panels on agentry and editing. Staff writers read their own works aloud. Writers discuss the craft of writing.
The Squaw Valley Community of Writers Poetry Workshop is one of the most important Poetry Workshops in the country. Each poet must write a new poem each day and these poems are discussed in the workshop the following day. There are also individual conferences and craft lectures each day.Participants must submit a manuscript to apply to the workshop. Our acceptance rate is 40% of total applicants. The Poetry Workshop clearly changes the way poets approach poetry, helping them to break through old habits and write something previously too difficult. We see past participants' names in some of the country's foremost poetry journals many times each year.In 2015 the Community of Writers was awarded the Barbary Coast Award from San Francisco LitQuake Organization.
