WE BELIEVE THERAPEUTIC RIDING AND OTHER EQUINE-ASSISTED ACTIVITIES OFFERED IN A RANCH AND WILDERNESS LANDSCAPE HAVE PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL AND COGNITIVE BENEFIT FOR BAY AREA RESIDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.
AT OUR 60-ACRE HISTORIC RANCH WE PROVIDED 3,900 HOURS OF PROGRAMMING INCLUDING OVER 1000 RIDING LESSONS FOR AN AVERAGE 100 RIDERS A WEEK, FIVE SUMMER HORSEMANSHIP CLINICS; SIX RANCH EVENTS AND THREE COMMUNITY EVENTS. OUR RIDERS RODE 1,100 MILES ON TRAILS ADJACENT TO OUR RANCH AND OUR VOLUNTEERS DONATED 13,500 HOURS OF LABOR VALUED AT MORE THAN 400,000. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED 40 RIDERS PARTICIPATING IN OUR ANNUAL HORSESHOW, 15 PARTICIPATING IN THE PT. REYES STATION WESTERN DAYS PARADE AND 12 RIDERS COMPETING AT THE MARIN COUNTY FAIR 4-H HORSE SHOW. PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS COME FROM SEVEN BAY AREA COUNTIES INCLUDING ALAMEDA, CONTRA COSTA, MARIN, NAPA, SAN FRANCISCO, SOLANO, AND SONOMA.(CON'T BELOW)
OUR RIDERS RANGE IN AGE FROM 5-84, WITH AT LEAST 50% OF OUR RIDERSHIP BEING UNDER THE AGE OF 18. PARTICIPANTS PRESENT WITH A RANGE OF CHALLENGES INCLUDING CEREBRAL PALSY, AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER, MOOD DISORDERS, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, DOWN SYNDROME, BLINDNESS, DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY AND A NUMBER OF OTHERS. THEY REPRESENT BROAD ETHNIC, GEOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS. 40% OF RIDERS ARE ON SCHOLARSHIP, AND OVER 35% OF THOSE RECEIVING SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE COME FROM HOUSEHOLDS WITH ANNUAL INCOME OF 30,000 OR LESS. IN 2018, IN AN EFFORT TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY, WE LAUNCHED A FORMAL VOCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES TO HELP THEM DEVELOP SKILLS THEY CAN TAKE WITH THEM INTO THE FUTURE. FACILITATED BY TRAINED STAFF, THE VOCATIONAL AND LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM (VALS) PROVIDES SPECIAL NEEDS YOUTH WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP A SET OF USEFUL LIFE AND JOB SKILLS WHILE ALSO CULTIVATING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. PARTICIPANTS OF THE VALS PROGRAM LEARN VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS BY TAKING PART IN EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING (EAL). EAL IS AN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING APPROACH THAT PROMOTES THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE SKILLS FOR EDUCATIONAL, PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL GOALS THROUGH EQUINE-ASSISTED ACTIVITIES. VALS PARTICIPANTS GAIN MEANINGFUL SKILLS SUCH AS AN IMPROVED ABILITY TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, IMPROVED COMMUNICATION SKILLS, INCREASED EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND AN ABILITY TO WORK ON A TEAM. THROUGH WORKING ON OUR RANCH, THEY DEVELOP ANIMAL HUSBANDRY SKILLS, GARDENING AND FACILITY MAINTENANCE SKILLS.
