Organizations Filed Purposes:
To promote excellence in the legal profession and to facilitate equal access to justice.
The primary programs provided by ACBA include: Lawyer Referral Service, Criminal Court Appointed Attorneys Program (CAAP) and Mandatory Continuing Legal Education.
We provided criminal defense representation to Alameda County defendants with whom the Public Defender had a conflict.In 2019 we placed about 2,800 cases with approximately 95 attorneys on our panel, who together put in roughly tens of thousands of hours defending the indigent. Our social worker program for juvenile defendants also continues to flourish.
In 2019 we had 1,393 members, and we provided those members with 107 Mandatory Continuing Legal Education programs. In addition, we carried out a variety of other programs including community projects and a forum for legal service providers to share knowledge and expertise and help improve the delivery of legal services in Alameda County.
Our Lawyer Referral Service placed 2,964 cases with members of our 88 attorney panel. Callers not placed generally were given other community resources and referrals. The LRS also conducted intake for the free clinics run by the related organization, Volunteer Legal Services Corporation.
