BayLegal provides meaningful access to the civil justice system through quality legal assistance regardless of a client's location, language or disability.
Bay Area Legal Aid ("BayLegal") provides free civil legal services to low-income Bay Area residents.
Health Care Access, Economic Security, and Consumer Rights: In 2019, BayLegal provided services to 10,239 low-income San Francisco Bay Area individuals, seniors, families with children, and people with disabilities in need of access to essential health care and public safety-net programs such as Medicare, Medi-Cal, Supplemental Security Incomes (SSI), and CalFresh. BayLegal also helped to remove financial impediments to housing, income, healthcare, and economic self-sufficiency for low-income consumers. Through this work, BayLegal secured nearly $23.8 million in quantifiable benefits to help low-income Bay Area residents meet their basic needs and improve their self-sufficiency.BayLegal also provides targeted services for vulnerable populations including foster and transition age youth, commercially sexually exploited children, youth with disabilities, mental health issues, and/or involvement in the dependency or delinquency systems, as well as veterans and formerly incarcerated people.
Housing and Homelessness Prevention: In 2019, Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal) helped 11,620 low-income San Francisco Bay Area individuals, seniors, families with children, and people with disabilities prevent homelessness and preserve and expand affordable housing by enforcing housing laws and regulations. BayLegal provided counsel and representation for clients who were victims of illegal evictions, including eviction after foreclosure, discrimination, substandard housing, and other housing rights violations. Through this work, BayLegal secured over $16.5 million in quantifiable benefits to help low-income Bay Area residents secure their basic need for safe, affordable and habitable housing.
Domestic Violence Prevention: In 2019, BayLegal provided integrated, holistic legal services to help 4,491 low-income San Francisco Bay Area abuse survivors and their children escape domestic violence. BayLegal provides legal assistance with obtaining restraining orders, child custody orders, divorces, and child and spousal support orders. BayLegal also assists sexual assault victims and abused immigrants and their children petition for immigration relief under the Violence Against Women Act. Through this work, BayLegal secured over $2.5 million in quantifiable benefits to help violence survivors achieve lasting safety and improve their self-sufficiency.
