Organizations Filed Purposes: The Breakthrough Institute is a global research center that identifies and promotes technological solutions to environmental and human development challenges.

Events: Overall network building is one of the principal ways Breakthrough makes change in the world, and we primarily execute on this through our events. Our flagship events, the Breakthrough Dialogues, took place in the Bay Area and DC areas, bringing together an ideologically diverse set of hundreds of experts, journalists, philanthropists, policy-makers, and business leaders together to interrogate current debates about jobs, equity, the social contract, the role of government, and the environment.

Research Programs: Due in large part to the growth of our staff, our research and writing output, as well as our publication rate, increased exponentially in 2019. Breakthroughs Climate and Energy team focuses on four major themes: climate science and policy; advanced nuclear energy; innovation, decarbonization, and energy transitions; and energy for development. Our Food and Agriculture work makes the case for technological, intensive agriculture as a pathway toward a sustainable food system.

Communication: Our communication work is a core element of what we do and ensures that our research products and ideas reach the right audiences. In 2019, we released our annual Breakthrough Journal issue with contributions from prominent experts. We redesigned out website, which greatly improved our user experience, the shareability of our content, the clarity of our research areas, and the polish of our visual brand. Relatedly, online web traffic improved dramatically. We also wrapped the third season of our podcast, which features guests who offer new ways to think about environmental challenges.
