Organizations Filed Purposes: THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH ALLIANCE (CSHA) IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE MOVEMENT TO PUT HEALTH CARE WHERE KIDS ARE, IN SCHOOLS. OUR WORK FOCUSES ON IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH BY ADVANCING HEALTH SERVICES IN SCHOOLS.

IMPROVE HEALTH AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS OF CHILDREN & YOUTH BY ADVANCING HEALTH SERVICES IN SCHOOLS.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE:CSHA PROVIDES TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO HELP SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES SET UP AND SUSTAIN SCHOOL HEALTH CENTERS AND SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMS. WE DEVELOP TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO STRENGTHEN SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMS. WE ALSO MANAGE A NUMBER OF SPECIAL PROJECTS AND LEARNING COLLABORATIVES FOCUSING ON AREAS SUCH AS TRAUMA, HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE SCREENING. OUR CONFERENCE, WEBINARS, TOOL KITS, AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE HELP SBHCS OFFER HIGH QUALITY, AGE-APPROPRIATE CARE TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE: - INCREASING THE NUMBER OF SBHCS IN CALIFORNIA FROM 108 TO 293. TODAY ALMOST 300,000 K-12 CALIFORNIA STUDENTS ATTEND SCHOOL ON A CAMPUS WITH SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTER.- DEVELOPING A SCHOOL MENTAL HEALTH IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE.- EXPANDING OUR SUBSTANCE ABUSE WORK TO INCLUDE A SPECIAL FOCUS ON THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC AND HOW IT AFFECTS CALIFORNIA YOUTH.- PROVIDING DEDICATED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ON TRAUMA-INFORMED PRACTICES FOR HEALING AND RESILIENCE IN OAKLAND, THE CENTRAL VALLEY AND WEST CONTRA COSTA.- SUPPORTING SBHCS AS THEY STRUGGLED TO ADAPT TO DISTANCE LEARNING AND TELEHEALTH UNDER THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

POLICY:CSHA ADVOCATES FOR POLICIES THAT IMPROVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY CARE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH BY MAKING SBHCS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION SYSTEMS. IN 2019 WE SPONSORED A CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY BILL TO CREATE AN OFFICE OF SCHOOL HEALTH IN THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. WE ALSO CONDUCTED ADVOCACY WITH LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL LEGISLATORS IN SUPPORT OF SCHOOL HEALTH AND SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH SERVICES.

OUTREACH:CSHA CONDUCTS OUTREACH TO BUILD SUPPORT FOR THE SBHC MODEL AND TO GENERATE INTEREST AMONG SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES IN ADDRESSING HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH, AND WELLNESS AT THEIR SCHOOL SITES. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:- HOSTING A CENTRAL VALLEY CONVENING FOR OVER 200 HEALTH AND EDUCATION PROVIDERS FOCUSED ON TRAUMA, MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION.- LEADING A GROWING NETWORK OF SCHOOL-HEALTH STAKEHOLDERS INCLUDING MORE THAN 8,000 INDIVIDUALS REPRESENTING SBHCS, SCHOOL DISTRICTS, COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS, DENTAL AND MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS, POLICY GROUPS AND OTHERS CONCERNED WITH CHILDREN'S HEALTH.- CONTINUING TO MENTOR AND SUPPORT A SMALL AND COMMITTED YOUTH BOARD WHICH CONNECTS CSHA TO YOUTH VOICE AND POWER.- INITIATING EFFORTS TO CREATE A SBHC COALITION IN THE UNDERSERVED INLAND EMPIRE.
