Organizations Filed Purposes: INSPIRE RESPECT FOR AND STEWARDSHIP OF THE NATURAL WORLD/PROVIDE QUALITY VISITOR EXPERIENCES

EDUCATION:OAKLAND ZOO PROVIDED EXTENSIVE ON- AND OFF-SITE EDUCATIONAL, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO CHILDREN AND ADULTS THROUGHOUT THE BAY AREA. DURING THE REPORTING PERIOD, 510 CLASSES, WORKSHOPS, OVERNIGHTS, PARTIES, AFTER- AND OUT OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND EVENTS WERE DELIVERED TO OVER 18,552 PARTICIPANTS. AN ADDITIONAL 2,322 CHILDREN WERE SERVED BY OUR PRE-K - 8TH GRADE ZOOCAMP PROGRAMS, DURING OUR THREE, SCHOOL BREAK CAMPS AND OUR TEN, WEEK-LONG SUMMER DAY CAMPS. OUR PUBLIC PROGRAMS PROVIDED GUESTS WITH PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS WITH LIVE ANIMALS, GAVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GUESTS TO ENGAGE AT ANIMAL FEEDINGS, AND OFFERED HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT FROM OUTSIDE PERFORMERS. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS, PATHWAY ENCOUNTERS, FEEDING TALKS, AND SPECIAL GUEST PRESENTATIONS. OVER 81,270 GUESTS ATTENDED PUBLIC PROGRAMS DURING 2018/2019. OUR ZOO-TO-COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM ALSO SERVED LOCAL STUDENTS DURING THE 2018/2019 FISCAL YEAR. THROUGH THAT INITIATIVE, OAKLAND ZOO PROVIDED 110 ZOOMOBILE, ZOOSCHOOL, AND WILDLIFE ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS, FREE OF CHARGE, TO 2,945 UNDERSERVED SCHOOL CHILDREN AND ADULTS, AS WELL AS 47 FREE BUS TRIPS FOR STUDENTS WHO WOULD NOT OTHERWISE BE ABLE TO COME TO THE ZOO. COMMUNITY: OAKLAND ZOO CONTINUED ITS STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION TO OFFERING FREE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING TO A TOTAL OF 3,023 UNDERSERVED STUDENTS, WE PROVIDED 3,250 FREE FAMILY VOUCHERS TO UNDERSERVED FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY. APPROXIMATELY 9,201 FAMILY MEMBERS VISITED THE ZOO AND ENJOYED KNOWLAND PARK BECAUSE OF THESE VOUCHERS. THROUGH ACTIVITY-BASED TABLING EVENTS, PRESENTATIONS AND SHOWS AT 11 PUBLIC EVENTS THIS YEAR (SUCH AS FESTIVALS, STREET FAIRS, COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS, AND SCIENCE FAIRS), WE PROVIDED CONSERVATION EDUCATION TO OVER 107,000 PEOPLE IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. 68 COMMUNITY GROUPS (TOTALING 1,980 INDIVIDUALS) VOLUNTEERED A TOTAL OF 7,980 HOURS TO WORK WITH OUR HORTICULTURE AND ANIMAL CARE DEPARTMENTS, AND AN ADDITIONAL 407 ADULTS AND CHILDREN PARTICIPATED IN 12 CREEK CLEANUP DAYS AT ARROYO VIEJO CREEK. FINALLY, OUR TEEN PROGRAMS HELPED 262 TEENS LEARN ABOUT AND PARTICIPATE IN A TOTAL OF 7 RESEARCH-BASED, LOCAL AND NATIONAL CONSERVATION RESEARCH TRIPS AND OVERNIGHTS, 42 CONSERVATION RESEARCH AND WORK EVENTS, AND APPROXIMATELY 38 PATHWAY ENCOUNTERS AND ANIMAL STATIONS (DELIVERED TO OVER 2,000 ZOO VISITORS). AN ADDITIONAL 18 TEEN WILD GUIDES PARTICIPATED IN A TWO WEEK RESEARCH-BASED TRIP TO COSTA RICA.CONSERVATION:IN 2019, OAKLAND ZOO RAISED $237K THROUGH QUARTERS FOR CONSERVATION WHICH WHEN COMBINED WITH MONIES RAISED THROUGH SPECIAL EVENTS, PLUS TIME AND IN-KIND DONATIONS, TOTALED OVER $493K. THE INCREASED CONSERVATION REVENUE ALLOWED US TO EXPAND OUR COMMITMENT TO INCLUDE LOCAL CALIFORNIA CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS. A FEW EXAMPLES INCLUDE MONEY FOR JAGUAR CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH WITH KAMINANDO JAGUAR RESEARCH AND COVERING THE COSTS FOR FORESTATION AND EDUCATION IN THE KIBALE NATIONAL FOREST IN UGANDA WITH THE NEW NATURE FOUNDATION. THE ZOO IS ALSO THE SOLE PROVIDER FOR THE BUDONGO SNARE REMOVAL PROGRAM IN UGANDA WHICH HAS DRAMATICALLY REDUCED THE NUMBER OF CHIMPANZEES INJURED BY SNARES IN THAT AREA.THE ZOO ALSO COMMITS STAFF TIME, EXPERTISE, AND SUPPLIES TO CONSERVATION PROJECTS HERE IN THE US. THE ZOO STAFF TREATED CALIFORNIA CONDORS FOR LEAD POISONING WHICH WERE RELEASED BACK TO THE WILD. OAKLAND ZOO ALSO RESCUED, CARED FOR AND FOUND HOMES FOR SEVERAL ORPHANED MOUNTAIN LION CUBS THROUGH OUR BAY AREA COUGAR ACTION TEAM'S PARTNERSHIP WITH CDFW. OAKLAND ZOO'S OWN AMPHIBIAN CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM RESCUED, TREATED, AND RELEASED HUNDREDS OF MOUNTAIN YELLOW LEGGED FROGS SUFFERING FROM CHYTRIDIOMYCOSIS IN THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS. WESTERN POND TURTLES ARE BEING HOUSED AND CARED FOR TEMPORARILY FOR CDFW BUT WILL EVENTUALLY BE RELEASED TO A REFURBISHED LAKE NEAR SACRAMENTO. WITH OUR IINNII INITIATIVE PARTNERSHIP, OAKLAND ZOO RAISED AND RELEASED 11 HERITAGE BLOODLINE BUFFALO CALVES IN MONTANA NEAR GLACIER NATIONAL PARK. TIME, SUPPLIES, AND EXPERTISE ARE ALSO GIVEN TO INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION PARTNERS INCLUDING UGANDA, KENYA, AND GUATEMALA. OAKLAND ZOO ORGANIZED A GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS TO GO TO UGANDA TO HELP WITH VARIOUS PARTNER OBJECTIVES, INCLUDING TREATING AND DE-WORMING HUNDREDS OF GOATS USED FOR ALTERNATIVE MEAT AND INCOME. HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS OF SUPPLIES WERE BROUGHT FOR THE VET AND ECO-RANGER STAFF OF BUDONGO TO HELP THEM CARE FOR AND PROTECT CHIMPANZEES. STAFF WENT TO PANAMA TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME WITH KAMINANDO JAGUAR PROJECT, BRINGING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR 5 SCHOOLS IN THE JUNGLE HABITAT. IN 2019, OAKLAND ZOO EXPANDED OUR CONSERVATION WORK WITH CALIFORNIA TRAIL WITH A FOCUS ON ENCOURAGING THE PUBLIC TO TAKE ACTION FOR OUR LOCAL CALIFORNIA WILDLIFE. EACH EXHIBIT INCLUDES CONSERVATION MESSAGES AND PARTNERSHIPS IN ADDITION TO THE FOCUS ON THE ANIMALS. THE BISON EXHIBIT HOUSES A GROUP OF ANIMALS WHICH WILL BE ALLOWED TO BREED FOR RELEASE BACK TO THE WILD. THE CONDOR EXHIBIT HOUSES CALIFORNIA CONDORS WHO ARE PART OF THE RANGE WIDE RECOVERY PROGRAM. WE BEGAN A LARGE, ALL-ZOO ANTI PLASTICS CAMPAIGN RESULTING IN COMMUNITY CLEAN UPS AROUND THE BAY AND ELIMINATION OF PLASTICS WITHIN OUR OWN PROCEDURES, AS WELL AS WASHED ASHORE ARTISTIC DISPLAYS OF PLASTICS TO ENCOURAGE ACTION. OAKLAND ZOO AND CONSERVATION SOCIETY OF CALIFORNIA STRIVES TO MAKE IT EASY FOR OUR VISITORS TO TAKE ACTION FOR WILDLIFE.
