THE CORAL REEF ALLIANCE (CORAL) IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL NGO THAT IS ON A MISSION TO SAVE THE WORLD'S CORAL REEFS. FOUNDED IN 1994, CORAL HAS A HISTORY OF WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH COMMUNITIES TO REDUCE DIRECT THREATS TO REEFS. (CONTD. ON SCHEDULE O)RECENTLY, CORAL LED SCIENTIFIC RE-SEARCH INTO HOW CORALS ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CONSERVATION TODAY. BY COMBINING ITS COMMUNITY-CENTERED CONSERVATION APPROACH AND SCIENTIFIC EXPERTISE, CORAL CREATES THE CONDITIONS THAT GIVE REEFS AROUND THE WORLD THE BEST CHANCE TO THRIVE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
SAVING THE WORLD'S CORAL REEFS.
MESOAMERICAN REGION (MAR) CORAL WORKS WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, COMMUNITIES AND GOVERNMENTS ACROSS THE MESOAMERICAN REEF SYSTEM TO ESTABLISH THE CONDITIONS THAT WILL HELP CORALS ADAPT TO THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE WITH FUNDING FROM LONG-TERM GRANTS RECORDED AS REVENUE IN THE PRIOR FISCAL YEAR, BUT RECEIVABLE IN THE CURRENT YEAR. OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS, WE HAVE BUILT A REPUTATION AS EXPERTS IN RESOLVING WATER QUALITY ISSUES, ADDRESSING OVERFISHING, AND PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM. SPECIFICALLY, OUR LONGSTANDING WORK IN COASTAL HONDURAS AND THE BAY ISLANDS TO REDUCE LOCAL THREATS HAS RESULTED IN TANGIBLE AND DURABLE BENEFITS TO BOTH CORAL REEFS AND THE COMMUNITIES THAT DEPEND ON THEM.
HAWAI'ION THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, CORAL IS IMPLEMENTING A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO REDUCING LAND-BASED SOURCES OF POLLUTION. ON HAWAI'I ISLAND, CORAL WORKS WITH COMMUNITIES AND THE GOVERNMENT TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF POORLY TREATED WASTEWATER THAT LEACHES INTO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT, HARMING CORAL REEFS, HUMAN HEALTH, AND THE LOCAL ECONOMY. CORAL ALSO LEADS A ROBUST CITIZEN SCIENCE PROGRAM TO COLLECT WATER QUALITY DATA IN THREE REGIONS ACROSS HAWAI'I ISLAND TO RAISE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND INFORM RESOURCE MANAGEMENT DECISIONS. IN WEST MAUI, WE RESTORE WATERSHEDS USING A VARIETY OF RIDGE-TO-REEF TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING STREAM BANK STABILIZATION AND PLANTING (CONTD. ON SCHEDULE O)NATIVE SPECIES. OUR WORK CAPTURES AND RETAINS SEDIMENT AND INCREASING THE LAND'S CAPACITY TO FILTER STORMWATER AND ABSORB NUTRIENTS, SEDIMENTS, AND OTHER POLLUTANTS.
SCIENCE AND ALLIANCESTO HELP SAVE CORAL REEFS DURING AN ERA OF RAPID ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE, CORAL IS (1) IMPROVING OUR SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF HOW ORGANISMS ADAPT TO RAPID CHANGE; AND (2) USING THIS KNOWLEDGE TO IDENTIFY CONSERVATION STRATEGIES THAT PROMOTE ADAPTATION AND ARE ROBUST TO UNCERTAINTY ABOUT THE FUTURE. OUR RESEARCH SHOWS THAT EVOLUTION CAN HELP RESCUE CORAL REEFS AND THAT LOCAL MANAGEMENT IS ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS. CORAL IS LEADING ONGOING RESEARCH ON CORAL ADAPTATION POTENTIAL WITH UNIVERSITY PARTNERS, EMPLOYING FUNDS FROM LARGE, MULTI-YEAR GRANTS RECORDED AS REVENUE IN PRIOR YEARS, BUT AVAILABLE IN THE CURRENT YEAR. WE ARE TURNING THIS SCIENCE INTO ACTION BY(CONTD. ON SCHEDULE O)BUILDING ALLIANCES TO FACILITATE CORAL ADAPTATION WITHIN DIVERSE, CONNECTED, AND LARGE NETWORKS OF HEALTHY REEFS.
