Organizations Filed Purposes: AT DJDS WE USE OUR INNOVATIONS IN ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, AND REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT TO ATTACK THE ROOT CAUSES OF MASS INCARCERATION WHICH WE BELIEVE TO BE POVERTY, RACISM, LACK OF ACCESS TO RESOURCES AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ITSELF.

Concept Development:The Concept Development Process helps low income communities of color to imagine, design and develop spaces and places that restore and transform their communities and address the root causes of mass incarceration. As many of DJDS projects are new typologies and intended for communities that require significant external financing, the concept development phase is critical to fleshing out (1)what exactly we intend to build, for whom and why; (2) how thoughtful design can amplify, build capacity, and possibly improve outcomes for program partners; and (3) how much upfront ongoing capital is required to build and maintain the project. It supports the first critical step towards pre-development and construction in order for partners to gain access to capital which might otherwise be unattainable. In 2017 we set up the fund, developed processes and tools to do the process.

Creative Placekeeping:DJDS Produces projects that advance the field of creative community placemaking/placekeeping. We bring together community partners and other stakeholders to implement community-led change. Th Pop-Up village project increases vibrancy, creates a culturally relevant marketplace for low income entrepreneurs, and builds capacity among residents to take ownership of their communities. The Pop-Up village is a site activation tool that harnesses the power of design to catalyze the magic that emerges when people and programs come together in public space. With extensive community engagement DJDS developed, designed and fabricated custom equipment and vehicles which set the cultural environment for events. Each event series cultivates new local leaders, builds operational capacity for low income individuals, and shows what is possible when a cultural celebration and community empowerment serve as the base for wraparound service delivery.

Professional Services:DJDS provides technical architectural, project management, and real estate services to our non-profit and social justice partners in order to create spaces that restore and transform communities. Services include: programming/community engagement, concept development, schematic design, design development and construction documentation. Occasionaly DJDS offers real estate and site acquisition consulting services in order to support our partners gain ownership of their facilities
