There are two distinct experiences: Global Citizen Year Fellowship and Global Citizen Year Academy. Both programs select talented students who represent societys diversity and equip them with the empathy, agency and global network to drive impact today -- and over the course of their lives.Global Citizen Year Academy is an intensive leadership experience (delivered virtually) that equips determined young people worldwide with powerful skills for a lifetime of social impact. The program is designed as a 5-10 hour per week commitment that adds an enriching layer of purpose to school, travel, or work. Students enroll in our signature leadership course, join talks with todays most impactful changemakers, and receive personalized mentorship from a diverse pool of mentors. Global Citizen Year is launching a generation of leaders with the insight and conviction needed to move the world ahead. Beyond our core program is a bold vision that one day a global year becomes a new rite of passage and the hallmark of a world class education.
Since 2010, Global Citizen Year has shaped the life trajectory of nearly 1,000 young people through its Fellowship. The team and program have grown tenfold and it is positioned as the pre-eminent gap year and leadership experiences for future global changemakers. Global Citizen Year has grown its cohort each year, while maintaining a commitment to diversity and inclusion: 46% of our participants identify as students of color (compared to 16% of gap year participants nationally), and 51% of are from a low-income background (compared to 9% of gap year participants nationally). TO DATE,80% OF GLOBAL CITIZEN YEAR FELLOWS HAVE RECEIVED NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID, OVER 50% ARE ELIGIBLE FOR PELL GRANTS WHEN THEY GET TO UNIVERSITY.Global Citizen Year alumni are thriving in college and early careers. 91% of alumni report their Global Citizen Year has been instrumental in shaping their college experience, and 78% say their experience helped them develop the agency to make the most out of college. Our alumni approach their education with purpose, 88% graduated in 4 years or less (compared to 41% nationally). Our alumni have been honored as Fulbright Scholars, David Peace Prize winners, and Gates Millennium Scholars. They are working with top companies and organizations across every sector, from Tesla, Amazon, and JP Morgan to Ashoka, Teach for America, and the United Nations. Significantly, 94% of our alumni are stimulated and engaged at work (compared to 29% nationally), and 93% believe their work is making a difference in the lives of others. In 2020, we launched Global Citizen Academy, a semester-long leadership experience designed specifically for this unprecedented moment. Students take leadership courses on Minervas cutting-edge active learning Forum, have access to a mentorship directory and opportunities to do meaningful volunteer work, and learn from a speaker series including luminaries such as Melinda Gates, DeRay McKesson, and Seth Godin. Through Global Citizen Academy, were helping our next generation leaders find their purpose, their people and their power to change the world.Additionally, Global Citizen Year is driving a national conversation on the need to build a new leadership pipeline with a formative international experience as the cornerstone of their education. In 2020, Global Citizen Year and Founder/CEO, Abby Falik, were featured by NBC, NPRs All Things Considered, Fast Company, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
