Organizations Filed Purposes: Heart to Heart develops self-sustaining new medical programs in areas of need, measurably expanding access to life-saving cardiac care. Teams of specialists trained by Heart to Heart help reduce the global burden of heart disease.

Heart to Heart's primary program activities during fiscal year 2019 were associated with our (1) Going Global initiative and (2) Into the Heartland Campaign (2002-2019). Going Global expands Heart to Heart programs to develop self-sustaining regional cardiac centers in areas of need around the world. Into the Heartland is a nearly completed ambitious campaign to ensures that a child born with a heart defect anywhere in Russia will have access to life-saving cardiac procedures through our development of a network of six self-sustaining regional children's heart centers in strategic locations throughout the country.

Pediatric Cardiac CareTo date, Heart to Heart has graduated four of our six Russian partner sites to self-sustainability* (in St. Petersburg, Samara, Tomsk, and Rostov-on-Don); another two centers in Russia are currently in development (in Kaliningrad and Chelyabinsk) and on target to graduate to sustainability. Additionally, we conducted site assessment trips and exploratory training missions to potential partner sites in Armenia, Mexico, and Paraguay. As of Summer 2019, more than 28,000 children suffering from life-threatening heart defects have already been saved through cardiac surgical procedures performed at Heart to Heart partner sites. In addition, each year more 2,000 children's lives are saved through cardiac surgical procedures performed by specialists trained by Heart to Heart volunteers at those same sites, at a minimal or no cost to Heart to Heart. *A Heart to Heart partner site graduates to self-sustainability when it can reach and maintain excellent surgical outcomes according to industry standards on an annual volume of 250 or more pediatric cardiac procedures.Russia | December 2018 and June 2019: Heart to Heart medical volunteers Dr. Frank Cetta (president, board of directors) and Dr. Nathan Taggart traveled to several cardiac programs in Samara, Moscow, and Tomsk, Russia to teach advanced topics in congenital heart disease (diagnosis, medical treatment, and lifetime patient follow-up care) to Russian medical colleagues.

Adult Cardiac CareMexico | December 2018: A Heart to Heart team focused on advanced surgical management of valvular disease (at a different, nearby hospital). The viability of long-term educational collaborations leading to sustainable cardiac care was assessed by Heart to Heart leadership.Paraguay | April 2019: A Heart to Heart team of acquired heart disease specialists conducted an exploratory surgical-educational mission to National Hospital, Itaugua in Paraguay: in addition to teaching/training, four patients lives were saved. The potential for a long-term collaboration in adult cardiac care was assessed by Heart to Heart leadership.

Site AssessmentArmenia | September 2018: A three-person Heart to Heart delegation conducted a site assessment visit to several hospitals in Yerevan to determine the viability of an educational collaboration to advance and expand pediatric cardiac care nationwide. Mexico | December 2018: A full Heart to Heart team of cardiac specialists conducted an exploratory pediatric/congenital training mission: in addition to teaching/training, five children's lives were saved. Paraguay | April 2019: Initial site assessment meetings were conducted with pediatricians at National Hospital, Itaugua to explore the possibility of collaborating to establish a de novo children's heart program.
