Organizations Filed Purposes:
An annual exhibit program for elementary school students, after school and summer art and science courses for children and teens, and drop-in activities for visitors of all ages are offered throughout the year.
Junior Center provides programs which support and enrich the K through 12 art and science curriculum in over 300 elementary and secondary school classrooms throughout Oakland and the East Bay.
SUMMER CAMP:The Junor Center offers 14 weeks of half-day or full-day summer camp during the summer months. Using a Creative Youth Development approach, the camp day is centered on community building and hands-on STEAM learning. Course offerings include carpentry, drawing and painting, claymation, coding and game design, and natural science. Our 2018 session was led by professional, practicing artists and scientists and attended by 154 campers. Participants engage in hands-on learning and exploration at our center on Lake Merritt and outdoors at Lakeside Park. Fees are offered on a sliding scale and additional scholarships are available for families. Beginning in March 2020 virtual programming is also offered to continue our reach through the pandemic. ON-SITE ACTIVITIES: The Junior Center delivers multiple low-cost and no-cost program offerings through visiting hours of its five interactive learning spaces and after-school classes and workshops. Throughout the year we hosted over 6,200 visitors and 127 students aged 2-14 attended hands-on arts and science exploration classes. Using a creative youth development approach, content includes community building, social and emotional learning strategies, and 21st century skill building. Admission to the center is suggested donation with no family turned away for lack of funds and fees are on a sliding scale. Additionally, three free family days showcased our offerings to new and returning families. Beginning in March 2020 virtual programming is also offered to continue our reach through the pandemic. OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES:The Junior Center of Art and Science partnered with over 40 school and community sites throughout Oakland and the greater East Bay Area. Partnerships range from one-day workshops to year round residencies with sites including Oakland Parks, Recreation, and Youth Development, Oakland Unified School District, and Oakland family resource centers. Content is custom tailored to meet the unique, individual needs of the students and families participating at each site. All activities are centered on community building and hands-on, interactive arts and science learning. Beginning in March 2020 virtual programming is also offered to continue our reach through the pandemic. Participants are provided any necessary materials and supplies and engage with our programs online.
