The Oakland Chamber of Commerce Foundation carries out charitable work to benefit the greater Oakland community.
Tuffshed Communities: On any given night there are an estimated 2,000 unsheltered residents on the streets of Oakland, part of the total 4,071 who are homeless in the city. The City of Oakland opened its first Tuff Shed shelter in 2017. In a secured location with some barriers to entry, residents receive necessary services while working with case managers to transition into permanent housing. With the success of this program, the Foundation opened a second location in FY 2019- 2020.
Community Kitchens: The Foundation partnered with Community Kitchens and Oakland restaurants to provide hot meals for those in need during the Covid-19 crisis. Funds raised are used to purchase low-cost meals from Oakland restaurants. Over 4,000 members of our community are unhoused and without access to one hot meal every day. Our meals go out to meet the food needs of Oakland's unhoused, shut-in seniors, and others who are without other means. The Independent Restaurant Coalition predicts that up to 85% of independent restaurants could close due to the pandemic. Nationwide, 50% of restaurant industry workers have already been laid off. The revenues earned by our restaurant partners is a lifeline.
