The Oakland REACH is a parent-run, parent-led group committed to empowering families from our most underserved communities to demand high-quality schools for our children.
We work with families from the most underserved communities in Oakland to fight for opportunity for all kids. We launched a Literacy for All campaign, ran a COVID19 Relief Fund, and engaged and empowered thousands of parents.
Campaign: We are running campaigns on multiple fronts, and continuing our track record of policy wins and system shifts through grassroots parent organizing. On the policy side, we are working on implementing THE OPPORTUNITY TICKET, which provides enrollment priority to students in failing and closing schools. We also continue our focus on LITERACY FOR ALL, and are working to expand this work in partnership with OUSD. Finally, we joined with other families and the Community Coalition of Los Angeles to file a LAWSUIT in Superior Court against the State of California for failing to provide educational equality during COVID. We joined this lawsuit because we know what works and we want the State to listen to parent voices like ours.
COVID: COVID-19 REACH RELIEF FUND: When COVID19 hit, we knew our families would be some of the very hardest hit. Thats why we moved within days of the citys stay-at-home order to launch The REACH Relief Fund and raise money to help keep our families in their homes and with food on the table. And because of generous supporters, we were able to distribute over $400,000 to over 1,000 families.
OUR FAMILY ADVOCACY FELLOWSHIP educates parents and grandparents about the state of public education, the performance of our schools, and the school choices available. This knowledge empowers Fellowship graduates to use their voices to demand a high quality education for their children. Since December 2016, nearly 400 public school parents have graduated from the fellowship.OUR REACH OUTREACH TEAM organizes and mobilizes. We hit the streets connecting with parents in our most underserved communities, with children attending our lowest performing schools. We build relationships with our parents by inviting them to learn more about how to become better advocates for their children. Parents are invited to apply for our family advocacy fellowship, and we also offer a learning series and informative community meetings. We also bring together hundreds of parents to attend School Board meetings so our voices are heard in a productive, organized, and powerful way.
