Organizations Filed Purposes:
Oakland Youth Chorus is a multi-cultural music education program that brings together the City of Oakland and Bay Area youth from a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds to study and perform choral and vocal music. Oakland Youth Choruss mission focuses on creating and sustaining programs of high artistic merit that are accessible to and supportive of children and youth who might otherwise not be able to experience the joy of making music with others. The Organization trains youth to learn and perform a varied repertoire and teaches the historical and social context of music, enhancing the respect and understanding for diverse cultural traditions and heritages through two main programs, Chorus and Music in Schools.
The Oakland Youth Chorus unites diverse communities and transforms young peoples lives through excellence in music education and community performance.
Music in Schools program provides 1900 TK-8 singers and music students in yearlong programs at 24 sites, where students learn music of many cultures including Ghana, Palestine, Israel, Venezuela, South Africa, and Spain. Programs are offered significant in-school and community performances that provide opportunities for each student to develop confidence and community building across neighborhoods.
Chorus program continues to garner praise and acclaim for musicality and energetic performances including Chabot Space and Science, Oakland Zoo, Forbes 400 Philanthropy Summit, National Guild for Community Arts Education, Roger Waters at the Oracle Arena, Oakland Rotary, and Oakland Symphony. Concert Chorus and Chamber Singers also record with local artists (Max Park Band, Kev Choice) and tour nationally.
