SUMMER ACADEMY (SA) PROGRAMPARTNERS SUMMER ACADEMY IMPLEMENTED ITS 35TH CONSECUTIVE SUMMER AT COLLEGE PREP FROM JUNE 13 TO JULY 11, 2020. PARTNERS MONTH-LONG ACADEMIC PROGRAM PROVIDED VIRTUAL CLASSES BY ZOOM FOR OVER 80 SCHOLARS FROM 18 DIFFERENT PUBLIC MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN OAKLAND AND THE EAST BAY AREA. THESE SCHOLARS COMMITTED THEMSELVES FOR FOUR WEEKS TO THE PARTNERS EDUCATIONAL MENTORING MODEL THAT IS TRANSFORMATIVE, RIGOROUS, AND TOTALLY FUN. DESPITE THE PANDEMIC CONDITIONS AND AMID SOCIAL UNREST, PARTNERS PERSEVERED TO DELIVER SUMMER ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING WITH A FACULTY OF 14 TEACHERS AND 24 MENTORS (COLLEGE-AGE TEACHING INTERNS, AND HIGH SCHOOL-AGE ASSISTANT TEACHERS). ALONG WITH CORE CLASSES IN LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH, PARTNERS OFFERED INSTRUCTION IN DRAWING, DANCE AND DIGITAL MEDIA. PARTNERS EMPHASIZED THE SOCIO-EMOTIONAL LIFE PATHWAYS WORKSHOP TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH AND MINDFULNESS FOR OUR SCHOLARS, 100% OF WHOM IDENTIFY AS STUDENTS OF COLOR, AND 75% OF WHOM QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCEDCOST MEALS. EACH CLASS WAS TAUGHT BY A PROFESSIONAL TEACHER AND AT LEAST TWO MENTORS, PRESERVING OUR 4:1 SCHOLAR TO INSTRUCTOR RATIO. DUE TO THE DIRE NEED FOR MORE ACADEMIC SUPPORT, PARTNERS ADDED WEEKLY AFTERSCHOOL, 1-ON-1 TUTORING, AND ENSURED THAT ALL OUR SCHOLARS HAD LAPTOPS AND WIFI. WITH THE INCREASED NEED FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT IN THE COMMUNITY, OUR FORMAL MIDDLE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS FOR SUMMER ACADEMY (CLAREMONT, KIPP BRIDGE, ROSES IN CONCRETE, AND EDNA BREWER) INCREASED WITH THE ADDITION OF THESE OTHER MIDDLE SCHOOLS: ROOSEVELT, DOWNTOWN CHARTER ACADEMY, BAY FARM SCHOOL, BRET HARTE, COLISEUM COLLEGE PREP, AMERICAN INDIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL, WESTLAKE, MONTERA AND EAST BAY INNOVATION ACADEMY. OUR SUMMER ACADEMY 2020 THEME WAS FAMILY ROOTS WHICH WAS VERY APPROPRIATE FOR THE PANDEMIC TIMES AS WE REACHED OUT AND SUPPORTED OUR PARTNERS FAMILIES AND THEIR SCHOLARS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER ACADEMY WEEKS. AT PARTNERS, OUR SCHOLARS COLLABORATE WITH THEIR MENTORS AND TEACHERS EVERY DAY TO LIFT UP THEIR VOICES, EMPOWER THEMSELVES AND BUILD CURIOSITY AND GRIT FROM WITHIN. SUMMER ACADEMY IS A SAFE, NURTURING ACADEMIC SPACE WHERE SCHOLARS USE THEIR UNIQUE VOICES TO TELL THEIR COMPELLING STORIES, BUILD-UP THEIR CONFIDENCE AND GRIT AND FEEL EMPOWERED TO MAKE THEIR DREAMS COME TRUE.

ACADEMIC YEAR MENTORING (AYM) PROGRAMIN 2019-2020, PARTNERS ACADEMIC YEAR MENTORING (AYM) SUSTAINED ITS BEST-PRACTICE, 1-TO-1 AFTERSCHOOL TUTORING MODEL FOR TWO SEMESTERS THAT DIFFERED IMMENSELY. MEANWHILE, APPROXIMATELY 25 MENTORS TUTORED PARTNERS SCHOLARS FROM 16 PARTNER SCHOOLS IN OUTDOOR SPACES, CLASSROOMS, AND THE LIBRARY ON THE COLLEGE PREP CAMPUS. AYM MENTORS AND SCHOLARS CONTINUED TO USE RESOURCES FROM FRECKLE EDUCATION, AN ONLINE SOFTWARE PLATFORM THAT "DIFFERENTIATES INSTRUCTION ACROSS MATH, LANGUAGE ARTS, SOCIAL STUDIES, AND SCIENCE." MENTORS BUILT PROFOUND RELATIONSHIPS AND SUPPORTED THEIR PARTNERS SCHOLARS WITH CUSTOMIZED LEARNING PLANS, AS WELL AS WITH THEIR AUTHENTIC CARE AND UNDIVIDED ATTENTION. THE CONSISTENT PAIRING OF THE SAME MENTOR AND MENTEE, WEEKLY, AT OUR PARTNER SCHOOLS PROVIDED HIGH QUALITY AND INDIVIDUALIZED ACADEMIC SUPPORT.

HIGH SCHOOL ADVISING (HSA):IN 2019-2020, WEDNESDAYS CONTINUED TO BE THE "PARTNERS 8TH GRADE PROGRAM DAY AT COLLEGE PREP" IN WHICH SCHOLARS WERE EXPOSED TO HIGH SCHOOL TYPE PROGRAMMING AND PREPARATION IN THE HIGH SCHOOL ADVISING COMPONENT. PARTNERS 8TH GRADERS PARTICIPATED IN HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL ELECTIVES AND STANDARDIZED TEST PREP. THE UNIQUE COLLABORATION WITH AEQUORA, A NATIONWIDE LATIN LANGUAGE AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT CURRICULUM FROM THE PAIDEIA INSTITUTE, EVOLVED FROM ITS PILOT THE YEAR BEFORE TO BECOME A STRONG AND POPULAR AFTERSCHOOL OPTION AT CLAREMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL. ON-CAMPUS AT COLLEGE PREP, PARTNERS 8TH GRADERS CONTINUED THEIR PARTICIPATION IN A STANDARDIZED TEST PREP COURSE WITH COMPASS EDUCATION GROUP. STUDENTS RECEIVED INDIVIDUALIZED TUTORING SESSIONS AND PRACTICE TESTS TO ASSESS AND IDENTIFY THEIR STRENGTHS AND CHALLENGES FOR ISEE, SSAT, AND HSPT STANDARDIZED EXAMS. ALSO, PARTNERS PILOTED A FINANCIAL LITERACY CURRICULUM FROM THE JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT USA ORGANIZATION, ENTITLED "FINANCE PARK." FINANCE PARK WAS TAUGHT BY A PARTNERS MENTOR; THE CURRICULUM UNITS INTRODUCED PRACTICAL, LIFE-LESSON CONCEPTS IN FINANCIAL LITERACY SUCH AS PERCENTAGES, INTEREST, START-UP BUSINESS PRACTICES AND EMPLOYEE PAY STUB BREAKDOWN OF LINE ITEMS IN ADDITION TO OTHER CONCEPTS SUCH AS BANKING AND BANK ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT AND THE REAL-LIFE CHALLENGE OF CREATING BUDGETS AND LIVING WITHIN ONE'S BUDGET. MORE AND MORE PRIVATE SCHOOLS NOW OFFER EQUITY AND INCLUSION INFORMATION NIGHTS AND FINANCIAL AID RESOURCE WORKSHOPS FOR 8TH GRADE FAMILIES OF COLOR IN THE BAY AREA. PARTNERS SUPPORTED OUR FAMILIES BY JOINING THEM AT THESE SESSIONS AND PROVIDING TRANSLATION SERVICES DURING THESE WORKSHOPS AS NEEDED. PARTNERS GUIDED FAMILIES THROUGH THE COMPLICATED "PARENT SECTION" OF PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS, AS WELL AS THE FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION. FOR OUR SCHOLARS, PARTNERS WROTE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION TO HIGH SCHOOLS AND HELD INTERVIEW SIMULATIONS TO PREPARE OUR SCHOLARS FOR THESE UNFAMILIAR SCENARIOS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL APPLICATION PROCESS.
