Power California harnesses the energy of young voters of color and their families to create a state that is equitable, inclusive and just for everyone who calls California home.
FIELD CAMPAIGNS: WE BUILD THE VOTING POWER OF YOUNG PEOPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES IN COMMUNITIES OF COLOR, BUILDING A MOVEMENT AND BASE OF VOTERS OF COLOR FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS: BLACK, LATINX, MUSLIM, ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER, NATIVE, LGBTQ+, CURRENTLY AND FORMERLY INCARCERATED, AND UNDOCUMENTED AND CITIZENS. THROUGH OUR INTEGRATED VOTER ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY, WE ACTIVATE AND MOBILIZE YOUNG CALIFORNIANS OF COLOR AND THEIR FAMILIES TO VOTE, AND THEREFORE PARTICIPATE IN IMPORTANT DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES THAT IMPACT THEIR LIVES AND COMMUNITIES. CENTRAL TO OUR MOVEMENT BUILDING APPROACH IN COMMUNITIES ARE REPEATED TOUCHES WITH YOUNG VOTERS YEAR-ROUND DURING ON AND OFF ELECTION YEARS.WE ALSO INTEGRATE OUR UNIQUE APPROACH TO INTEGRATED VOTER ENGAGEMENT WITH STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS, NARRATIVE CHANGE AND CULTURAL SHIFT VIA CIVIC ENGAGEMENT BOOT CAMPS AND TRAINING OF OUR EMERGING COHORT, TO BUILD THE CAPACITY AND MAXIMIZE THE IMPACT AND EFFECTIVENESS OF OVER 20 ALLIANCE PARTNERS ACROSS THE STATE, LINKING EFFORTS TO ENGAGE VOTERS. WE INVEST RESOURCES AND TRAINING IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO BUILD UP THE LEADERSHIP AND CAPACITY OF YOUNG VOTERS ACROSS CALIFORNIA TO RUN FIELD CAMPAIGNS IN TANDEM WITH POWER CALIFORNIA. SINCE JANUARY 2019 WE HAVE TRAINED OVER 1,000 YOUNG PEOPLE OF COLOR AS CANVASSERS, PHONE BANKERS, GRASSROOTS ORGANIZERS, AND CAMPAIGN LEADS.
NARRATIVE CHANGE AND CULTURAL STRATEGY: WE USE COMMUNICATIONS, NARRATIVE, AND CULTURAL STRATEGIES TO CHANGE THE WAY YOUNG PEOPLE OF COLOR ARE VALUED AND POSITIONED AS LEADERS AND DECISION MAKERS AND TO CHANGE THE WAY YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCE POLITICS AND USE THEIR CIVIC POWER TO IMPROVE THEIR COMMUNITIES. We WORK WITH ARTISTS AND A COMMUNITY OF CREATIVES, CREATING VISUALS AND IMAGES THAT CELEBRATE AND LIFT UP THE CULTURAL VALUE OF OUR COMMUNITIES. IN 2019, WE LAUNCHED THE SECOND NEW MAJORITY FELLOWSHIP (NMF) COHORT WITH 12 FELLOWS FOCUSED ON NARRATIVE CHANGE AND STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS. FOR 15 MONTHS, FELLOWS WERE PLACED WITH ALLIANCE NETWORK PARTNERS ACROSS THE STATE TO BUILD THE COMMUNICATIONS AND NARRATIVE CAPACITY OF ALLIANCE PARTNERS. FELLOWS RECEIVED TRAINING AND COACHING. THE 13 FELLOWS IN OUR INAUGURAL 2017-2018 COHORT LED CIVIC ENGAGEMENT CAMPAIGNS STATEWIDE, COLLECTIVELY CONTACTING OVER 100,000 VOTERS. IN 2019 WE TRAINED 20+ YOUNG PEOPLE OF COLOR AS SPOKESPEOPLE. THROUGHOUT 2019, WE HAD OVER 30 MEDIA PLACEMENTS. OUR MEDIA COVERAGE INCLUDED MAJOR OUTLETS WITH FEATURES AND OP-EDS IN THE GUARDIAN, NPR, MTV NEWS, CAPITOL WEEKLY, The LOS ANGELES TIMES, NBC, UNIVISION, The FRESNO BEE, AND TEEN VOGUE, AMONG OTHERS. THROUGH TARGETED SOCIAL MEDIA WE CONTACTED OVER 100,000 YOUNG VOTERS ACROSS CALIFORNIA.
ORGANIZING PROGRAM: WE WORK WITH YOUTH ORGANIZING GROUPS TO STRENGTHEN THEIR ORGANIZING MUSCLE, YOUTH ENGAGEMENT, AND CULTURAL STRATEGY TO BUILD A SUSTAINED VOTING BASE WITH POWER TO MOBILIZE YOUNG VOTERS ACROSS CALIFORNIA. OUR ALLIANCE PARTNERS ACROSS THE STATE MOBILIZE 200,000 YOUNG VOTERS ANNUALLY MAXIMIZING THE IMPACT AND EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR COMBINED EFFORTS TO ENGAGE AND MOBILIZE YOUNG VOTERS. WE BUILT YOUTH ORGANIZING CAPACITY IN REGIONS OF LOS ANGELES AND THE CENTRAL VALLEY, IN ORDER TO STRENGTHEN REGIONAL MUSCLE AND INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDED TO EXPAND CIVIC POWER FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN AREAS WHERE LITTLE YOUTH ORGANIZING EXISTS. OUR YOUTH ORGANIZING HUBS CONTINUE TO BUILD MUSCLE AND INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDED TO EXPAND POLITICAL POWER FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND A BASE OF OVER 350 YOUTH LEADERS OF COLOR WITH STUDENTS ACROSS 50 CAMPUSES. Our PROGRAM STAFF IDENTIFY YOUTH LEADERS AT HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE CAMPUSES THROUGH OUTREACH, EVENTS, AND ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT YOUTH LEADERS IN ESTABLISHING YOUTH OF COLOR ORGANIZING CLUBS, REGISTERING YOUNG VOTERS, AND ENGAGING IN CIVICENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES.
