BANDALOOP celebrates the human spirit, nature, and communities through dance that uses climbing technology to expand and challenge what is possible. Since 1991 the work has re-imagined dance and activated natural and public spaces to evoke wonder and imagination in audiences and students around the world. As an internationally acclaimed touring dance company we have performed in over 300 locations in over 30countries and continue to bring dance to new audiences on a global scale. Early in FY 2020 we had already completed three live performance location launches and one film project, all at nationally recognized venues and prior to the pandemic / subsequent shut-down. Utilizing reserve funds and SBA / PPP federal government support in 2020 we continued our outdoor open rehearsals throughout the Oakland area even after the touring revenue stopped, we were able to remount outdoor work with strict pandemic protocols of physical distance and maskwearing. We also created two short self-produced films and incubated a new work with Black artist collaborators,Resistance is Beautiful. We maintained our core group of 15 staff, dancers and technicians for rehearsals, new work development, and continued focus on organizational activities including internal equity work, media archivingand curriculum building. We are very proud of having maintained safe practices and a zero-positive report from all COVID testing.Additionally, Bandaloops education program, primarily run out of our home studio in West Oakland, was shuttered due to COVID-19 however, we reframed our outdoor teaching for FY 2021 and also launched UPDRAFT AIR (Artist in Residence) as a one to one outdoor teaching model designed to specifically support BIPOC artists who are aligned with Bandaloop ethos and curious about vertical dance. We expect to return to an average of 25 touring project per year post COVID-19 pandemic with an already strong inquiry roster of live performances for 2021 & 2022. Education programming will also return in the summer of 2021.Based in Oakland for the last thirty years, Bandaloop has become embedded in the local fabric of public art and has grown and experienced change alongside peer artists and arts organizations. We have performed specifically in over twenty different Bay Area locations, earning respect both for excellence in performance and for our culture of safety. We are now artist in residence at four different properties with public access across the San Francisco / Oakland community. Bandaloop has several distinctive communities that it serves: audiences world-wide, local youth and adult students, artistic collaborators and peers, as well as community partners that visit or sublet the Bandaloop studio.Bandaloop continues to work towards increasing access to our programs for underserved communities, including a twenty-five year partnership with Destiny Arts Center, and more recent CAC and Oakland Arts Council funded experiential learning programs or local youth groups like Prescott Circus, the Boys and Girls Club, East Oakland Dance Center, California Shakespeare Theater, Mycelium Youth Network, and Oakland School for the Arts.Bandaloops free outdoor performances remove barriers to attendance such as ticket purchase and venue access. The work attracts socio-economically diverse audiences because of its universal visual and kinesthetic expressions of flight and freedom; its diverse musicality, its athleticism and redefinition of the relationship between gravity and movement. Bandaloop draws live audiences of thousands and online audiences in the millions.
