The Immigrant Rights and Empowerment program offers a space for day laborers and low wage workers to build community, organize, and advocate for issues impacting their community. The Oakland Workers' Collective has components: vocational, training, leadership development, and employment linkage. In 2019 we provided 545 placement to workers participating in the project. Moreover, we developed relationships with 256 non-duplicated employers, some of whom retain OWC workers post initial placement. Day laborers during the Tuesday weekly meeting received 44 training and workshops on topics such as workplace health and safety, employment rights, health and wellness training, Know Your Rights, professionalism at the workplace. We have continued our collaboration with Centro Legal de la Raza and Causa Justa :: Just Cause to provide a wraparound service model that responds to the basic needs of low wage workers in Alameda County. We have also continued collaboration to support community education around the issue of minimum wage with seven agencies in Oakland through the Fair Labor Oakland Coalition. In 2019, we continued to foster collaboration with Centro Legal de la Raza and Worksafe under the "Safe and Secure Jobs" project were we provided day laborers and workers with health and safety training, workplace know your rights trainings, and leadership development on the issues of workplace safety and advocating in Sacramento for bills that supported both immigrant and workers' rights in 2019. We also hosted our annual Fiesta en Comunidad (Community Holiday Party). The holiday party provided day laborers and their families: 234 toys, 214 food bags, 75 hygiene packages.
The Wellness and Prevention program provides health navigation and referral services to uninsured and underserved immigrants in the Bay Area. It is also comprised of our food access program, which includes the weekly distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables to single adults and families in the surrounding neighborhood, hot and nutritious community lunches which are served two times a week, and a hot breakfast which is distributed to day laborers two times a week on the streets where they are waiting for work. These lunches included 20 minute talks by our Health Outreach Worker about healthy eating, and preventative health, including information about living with diabetes and reducing risks to chronic illness, healthy eating habits, and food nutrition value. The Wellness and Prevention program also provided 2,018 referrals in collaboration with the Health Access Program to other community based organizations and agencies for needs relating to immigration, housing, employment, and family law, enrollment in health insurance programs and other government benefits, affordable housing and shelter space, consulate services, tax preparation, and adult education.
