Urban Habitat works to democratize power and advance equitable policies to create a just and connected Bay Area for low-income communities and communities of color. We confront structural inequities impacting historically disenfranchised communities. Through strategic partnerships, we support increasing the power and capacity in low-income communities and communities of color.
Urban Habitat brings race and class to the forefront of transportation, land use, and housing policies to create a Bay Area where low-income people and people of color can live in just and connected neighborhoods.
In 2019, Urban Habitat helped launch a campaign for a regional transportation funding measure, Mobilize the Bay, anchored by the Voices for Public Transportation coalition, that we previously co-founded. The campaign played a key role in developing state enabling legislation for a regional funding measure. Our tenant protections work included leadership on the steering committee of the Regional Tenant Organizing network (RTO) co-founded by Urban Habitat. In addition to advancing tenant protection policies, RTO assisted in coordinating the Northern California renter assembly and Bay Area participation in the California renter assembly. We also convened the Bay Area 4 All Preservation Table. As co-conveners of the 6 Wins for Social Equity Network we anchored the equity and tenant protection strategy for a regional housing measure planned for the November 2020 ballot.
The Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) trains and supports low-income people of color to serve on boards and commissions in the Bay Area. In 2019, we held our tenth BCLI cohort with 17 fellows from Hayward, Richmond, Oakland, San Leandro, San Francisco, and San Mateo County. Three of the fellows have been appointed to a commission. We also hosted our third Civic Leadership Training (CLT), a pre-BCLI training series with 15 resident leaders who were nominated by our allies, including East Bay Housing Organizations and Oakland Housing Authority. Lastly, we provided leadership development trainings and technical assistance to First Five Contra Costas East County Regional Group, Healthy Richmonds North Richmond Resident Leadership Team, and the Center for Human Developments Community Leaders Network.
