Organizations Filed Purposes: The W. Haywood Burns Institute helps to advance the well-being of children of color and poor children by building community centered responses to youthful misbehaviors that are equitable and restorative.

To protect and improve the lives of youth of color, poor children and their communities by ensuring fairness and equity in child serving systems.

The Site Based Program focuses on reducing racial and ethnic disparity nationwide. The BI works to improve outcomes for all people involved in the administration of justice by offering innovative training and technical assistance to stakeholders to effectively address and reduce disparity in their counties. BI facilitates a collaborative environment where community and system stakeholders work strategically, using data to reduce racial and ethnic disparity by building a community-centered response to youthful misbehavior that is equitable and restorative.

The Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) demonstrates that jurisdictions can safely reduce reliance on secure confinement and generally strengthen their juvenile justice systems through a series of interrelated reform strategies. JDAI, a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is now being replicated in almost 200 jurisdictions in 39 states and the District of Columbia. The BI serves as a technical assistance provider to JDAI sites throughout the nation.

The Policy program gathers, analyzes and disseminates reports regarding a whole array of issues pertaining to young people in trouble with the law including, but not limited to, school discipline, the effectiveness of evidence-based practices and innovations in youth justice.
